You might think your dog ignores you at the park on purpose. Really, the squirrel is just more exciting than you, for now.

(Never punish a dog who comes back, even a slow one. It teaches them to come back slower.)

Make coming back a party, never use the recall word for bad news, build up from indoors, practise on a long line, call once, and send your dog back to play afterwards.

You might think your dog will just get used to being alone. For a lot of dogs, it has to be taught, a few seconds at a time.

(This works for adult dogs and rescues too, not only puppies.)

Start tiny, keep goodbyes boring, take the drama out of keys and shoes, tire the brain before you go, and leave them with a long-lasting chew. If you see howling, damage or toileting while you are out, a vet or qualified behaviourist can help.

You might think your dog pulls because they are stubborn. Usually pulling simply works, because it gets them where they want to go faster.

(No pain-based gear needed. It hides pulling without teaching anything.)

Stop when the lead goes tight, reward your dog for walking by your side, start somewhere boring, add sniff breaks and change direction to keep it interesting. A well-fitted harness and a 2 m lead make it easier.

You might think your puppy eating poop means something is wrong with them. It is gross, but it is also really common, and there is usually a clear reason behind it.

(Yes, cat litter trays count. They are a puppy favourite.)

Taste, attention, stress, boredom, hunger or a health issue are the usual causes. Pick up straight away, keep days busy and calm, teach Leave it, and never punish. If it keeps happening, check in with your vet.

You might think Halloween is all fun for dogs. The sweets, the doorbell and the costumes can make it a stressful night.

(If your dog freezes in a costume, that is a no. A bandana counts as dressing up.)

Keep sweets and wrappers out of reach, check the costume leaves eyes, ears and mouth free, give your dog a quiet room away from the door, and make sure their ID is up to date. If they eat chocolate or anything with xylitol, call your vet straight away.

You might think fireworks night is just one bad evening. For a scared dog, it can mean weeks of fear, so the preparation has to start now.

(Comforting a frightened dog does not make the fear worse. That one is a myth.)

Start 2 to 3 weeks early, set up a safe den, practise very quiet firework sounds with treats, walk before dark, and close the curtains with the TV on. If your dog panics every year, talk to your vet well ahead of time.

You might think puppy training means teaching a long list of tricks. Really, 5 simple commands cover most of daily life.

(Recall and Leave it are the 2 that can genuinely keep your dog safe.)

Sit for polite manners. Middle for a safe spot between your legs. Stay for doors and kerbs. Recall for coming back every time. And Leave it for anything dangerous on the ground. Keep sessions short, reward fast, and end on a win.

You might think a well-behaved dog is one who knows a lot of commands. Most of the time it is one whose owner understands why they do what they do.

(None of these need special equipment. They just change how you see your dog.)

No dog acts out of spite. Your dog is not bad, nobody explained the rules. Trust beats fear. Connection comes before commands. Train where life happens. Small steps every day. No dog has to be perfect. And your dog is always learning, even when you are not training.

You might think dog coats are a bit silly. For some dogs they are basic welfare. For others, they are the wrong call.

(And never shave a double coat to "keep them cool.")

Thin, small, very young and older dogs lose heat fast and genuinely benefit. Huskies and their relatives do not. Rinse the grit off paws after winter walks, and teach boots indoors with food long before you need them.

You might think treats are the harmless part of the day. They are where the extra weight hides.

(Yes, even the healthy-looking ones.)

Check the first ingredient, keep treats inside the daily calories rather than on top, break them pea-sized, and read human foods twice, because xylitol is toxic and it is in more things than you would guess.

You might think enrichment means buying something. The things that work best are already in your kitchen.

(A folded towel honestly outperforms most puzzle toys.)

Scatter the dinner, hand over a cardboard box, let the nose choose the route, and freeze a stuffed rubber toy. 10 minutes of sniffing does what a longer walk could not.
