A huge thank you to all those who came along to the Open Doors / Open Studios at Wasps Studios in Meadowmill Dundee. It's always a good reason to give the studio a mop and actually look at and review my plein air paintings from around Scotland. As artists, designers, and makers, in this beautiful old jute mill, we spend a large part of our day behind closed doors, planning, playing, failing, trying again, and sometimes it takes a bring breath in to show that process and space to the world. But it was a weekend of interesting and lovely conversations, many laughs, and a lot of recommendations on where to paint next, followed by some quiet time watching the beautiful moon! You are all invited to come visit our exhibition called Works in Progress in Meadow Mills Project Space - as part of Open Studios : 26th& 27th Sep. Here’s our exhibition text and we hope to see you there! Welcome to our exhibition that shines a light on artworks that are progressing towards becoming something. The artistic process is rarely linear. We stop, start, reverse, twist and turn and oftentimes end up back where we started, usually not understanding their significance until much later, sometimes years. These works may be stepping stones towards a new body of work, a commission or previously unresolved objects that are now calling out for fresh attention. The pieces are offered not as shiny finished ‘exhibition ready’ artworks but rather as an insight into the mostly hidden, shy outcomes of experimental studio practice. The late great artist Dame Phyllida Barlow talked about the studio speculations, the kind of making that mostly goes unseen, as the noble artefacts of the studio. It is in that spirit that we present our artefacts in their rawest, unpolished and vulnerable state. Hello, I've not been here in a while, sometimes things get in the way of life and painting or really painting and life. But a wee roadtrip to the Isle of Lewis and Harris was so much more than I expected, stunning wild, and something new and completely unexpected around each corner. Plus, the folk we met were lovely. This trip away was so needed, after this summer, and a wee bit special. This painting was done on the last day on the way to the ferry with Jf on clockwatching and parking the van to create a wind block(ish). Bizarrely, the time constraints were productive, and there was no time for thinking just pleinair painting, and it felt so good!!! Thank you, jf. For the road trip and giggles. Exhibition Spotlight - SHIFT We’re excited to share that collective member Astrid Leeson is exhibiting in SHIFT, a group exhibition bringing together six artists from the Meadow Mill Curatorial Group in Dundee. Featuring work by Astrid Leeson, Miriam Mallalieu, Louise Ritchie, Paola McClure, Bruce Shaw and Lada Wilson, the exhibition explores ideas of movement, change and transition. The title also reflects a more practical shift, artists based at one Wasps studio building moving their work into the gallery space of another. 📅 7–30 August 2026 📍 Perth Creative Exchange 🕘 Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm 🎭 20 August, 5:30pm: Lada Wilson will present a short performance in the gallery. There’s no formal opening or closing event, so visitors are welcome to drop in during the gallery's usual opening hours and experience the exhibition throughout August. Good, beautiful morning! "The last shift" While today is the last shift before, I'm made redundant. These wee oils painted this morning are my last two paintings for the group exhibition SHIFT. While I'm a mixed bag of sadness and trepidation, i recognise that whenever there is an ending, there is always the prospect of new opportunities - Crazy mixed up stuff. I loved creating this morning ritual for this exhibition, and I'm super excited to be exhibiting with this wonderful bunch again! Well, Frames gallery, it's been nice knowing you. Thank you for selling my pictures. My oil paintings "Thunder Roars" and "Good Therapy" sold at Artay this year, and "A quiet day " and "Setting sun" were my last sales through the gallery. Which was all very exciting! So now there are just a few more shifts of clearing stuff to do and then finished. As this tough week draws to a close, I end my week as an artist. (Thank you, Dr. Louise) My heart is breaking as my spiritual home, the Cairngorms, continues to burn. I can't begin to imagine the loss of habitat, ecology, history, and then the personal impact on all those who live, love, and work there. The wonderful @louiseritchiegram has a wonderful piece of advice that she regularly shares, and that is to "Finish the week as an Artist," so for the last few weeks, I have! From favourite marks in a painting, cutting the 'correct' triangles to wrap a wee pressie to padding blue paint around on the soles of my feet, and good tunes in the studio, I Astrid, am ending the week as an artist -happy n tired!
