Can you tell time using the stars? One technique used by the Inuit and other Northern Navigators uses the Big Dipper and Polaris to create a 24 hour clock! . . . . . . . . . . #funfact #astronomy #culturalastronomy #bigdipper #time #clock by @astronostories
Before weather predictions and flood alerts these ancient civilisations used the brightest star, Sirius... In ancient Egypt and Greece, the star Sirius was more than just a bright light in the sky—its heliacal rising marked the start of the Nile’s flood season and signaled the kind of summer to come. This brilliant star inspired the term 'dog days' and may even be the reason we say someone is 'starstruck’. . . . . . . . #astronomy #culturalastronomy #ancienthistory #history #Sirius #ancientegypt #ancientgreece by @astronostories

What do you call the moon? 🌙 The fact that we call the moon - “the moon” can seem pretty underwhelming compared to other moon names like Titan or Phobos. But, when you look back at the origins of the word moon you’ll see the historical importance of the moon has been woven in to its names across many languages. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #astronomy #moon #luna #fullmoon #culturalastronomy #etymology #history by @astronostories
Ursa Major is one of the most recognizable constellations in the Northern Hemisphere. Do you know why? This constellation has two important features, the first being the guide stars. There are many guide stars in the constellation, but the two most useful are at the front of the dipper pointing to Polaris, the north star. It also contains guide stars pointing to other constellations, which makes Ursa Major a useful constellation to begin finding other ones. Secondly, Ursa Major is a circumpolar constellation. At a certain latitude, the constellation is visible all year long. As opposed to some constellations that are only visible during certain times of the year. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #astronomy #culturalastronomy #bigdipper #ursamajor #northstar #polaris #circumpolar by @astronostories
Do you believe people act strangely around a full moon? 🌕 Stories about people acting more strangely around the full moon have been around for centuries and can be found all across the world. It seems this belief may be a remnant from a time without artificial lighting at night. The full moon can make the night sky up to 25 times brighter than during the full moon. This may have impacted sleep quality and length leading to this stranger behaviour around a full moon. There have been different studies done looking at a wide range of topics like frequency of hospital visits, sleep changes, athletic performance and more. The results of the studies are generally pretty mixed. . . . . . . . . #fullmoon #astronomy #culturalastronomy #folktales #Shakespeare #moonmadness #luna by @astronostories
Tonight you'll be able to see a lunar eclipse if you’re in the right area! We’re currently in eclipse season where the orbital planes of the Earth and the Moon are intersecting this allows for a lunar eclipse during the full moon (like tonight) and a solar eclipse during the new moon! Eclipse seasons happen roughly every 6 months with the next one in September where those who were not able to see the eclipse tonight may get a chance to see one then! . . . . . . . . . #lunareclipse #eclipse #march14 #thursday #astronomy #culturalastronomy #folklore #moon #sun #earth by @astronostories
If you live in an area that observes Daylight Savings Time be prepared for the clock change coming on March 8th! Opinions on daylight savings are pretty mixed with some arguing that it increases productivity and helps industries like tourism and retail. However, every year when the time changes you will inevitably come across the health impacts of the hour time change on our circadian rhythm, increase in heart attacks and traffic incidents. Daylight savings has been around for a long time just in different forms. In Ancient Rome and Egypt the time between sunrise and sunset was divided in to 12 equal hours - an hour in the summer could be 75 minutes long using this system. Before industrialisation and artificial lighting daily activities especially outdoor labour would be governed by the amount of daylight. After the implementation of railways- timezones began to be established in North America and England to keep timing of the trains consistent across cities and companies. However due to the tilt of Earth’s axis many parts of the world do not have the same amount of daylight throughout the year. Thus again different forms of daylight savings were proposed to adjust the daily schedule and time standardisation to daylight availability. It wasn’t until World War 1 where nationwide daylight savings adjustments were put in to increase wartime production. In the following century over one third of all countries have since adopted some form of daylight savings.  What do you think of daylight savings? . . . . . . . . . #daylightsavings #dst #timezones #astronomy #history #culturalastronomy #springforward #timekeeping #ancienttimekeeping #timechange by @astronostories
Daylight Savings is this weekend! You can find versions of daylight savings all throughout history. For example, the Ancient Romans and Egyptians divided the time between sunrise and sunset in to 12 hours. In the summer an hour could be as long as 75 minutes and as short as 45 minutes in the winter. In an agrarian context people often just worked with whatever daylight was provided to them. During the Industrial Revolution things changed… The increase in use of trains and railways meant that time had to become more standardised across the world leading to the creation of timezones across countries and later a worldwide timezone system. After this time standardisation a new problem came up which was the varying number of daylight hours throughout the year. In order to maximise the working time in the daylight - daylights savings time was proposed! First adopted by Germany and England during the First World War over 1/3 of all countries have adopted some form of daylight savings since. What do you think of daylight savings? . . . . . . . #daylightsavings #dst #timezones #astronomy #history #culturalastronomy #springforward #timekeeping #ancienttimekeeping #timechange by @astronostories
The Borana Calendar is over 2000 years old and uses 7 stars/star groups and the moon to keep track of time. The year is 354 days long, including 12 lunar months. The Calendar is still used by the Borona people in Ethiopia and Kenya and is believed to be based on a Cushitic Calendar. The Namoratunga Pillars in near Lake Turkana in Kenya are believed to originally be Cushitic and they have theorized that the pillars were aligned with the same stars to function as a stone calendar. (However, this theory seems to have a mixed bag of results). by @astronostories
