The Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) is an emission nebula located approximately 1,800 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. Its vibrant red glow comes from ionized hydrogen gas energized by ultraviolet radiation from nearby young, massive stars. Dark dust clouds sculpt the nebula’s distinctive “pelican” shape, while ongoing star formation takes place within its dense molecular regions.

Another cloudless night along the California central coast!

NGC 404 - Mirach's Ghost

Distance: About 10 million light-years from Earth, sitting just outside our Local Group of galaxies.

Discovery: Found by astronomer William Herschel on September 13, 1784.

Classification: Lenticular (S0) galaxy, meaning it has a disk shape like a spiral galaxy but lacks actual spiral arms.

Size: Around 10,000 light-years across.

Astro gets me through the night!!!

The Butterfly nebula

IC 1318, NGC 6302, and Cadwell 69

The Butterfly nebula is a massive, glowing cloud of gas and dust located roughly 4,000 light-years away in the heart of the Cygnus constellation. It earns its nickname because a thick, dark lane of cosmic dust splits the glowing gas down the middle, creating the striking appearance of two outstretched butterfly wings.

The "Great Rift" Illusion:

The dark body of the butterfly isn't empty space. It is actually a dense foreground silhouette known as LDN 889. This thick cosmic dust lane blocks the light from the glowing nebula behind it, creating the perfect split that forms the wings.

The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is a vast emission nebula located about 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Perseus.
Its distinctive shape resembles the outline of California, while its deep red glow is produced by ionized hydrogen gas energized by the nearby star Xi Persei.
Spanning roughly 100 light-years, this cosmic cloud is a beautiful example of interstellar gas illuminated by stellar radiation.

The

Cocoon Nebula is a beautiful space cloud where new stars are born. It is located between 2,500 and 4,000 light-years away from Earth in the constellation called Cygnus (the Swan). The entire cloud is huge, stretching about 15 light-years across.

Inside the cloud, a brand-new cluster of stars is currently growing. What makes it special is that it features three different types of space clouds mixed together:
