How do @asucollegeofglobalfutures students spend their summer? Spencer Danzig spent it carrying out research in Rwanda to support @solar_spell! A returned @peacecorps Volunteer and @asu_sfis student, Spencer helped us interview SolarSPELL users across the country to learn about their experiences using the library. While in country, he also carried out research for his master's thesis exploring how local ownership contributes to the long-term sustainability of development initiatives.

"The trip changed how I think about qualitative research," says Spencer. "I understand more fully that every response represents someone offering their time and knowledge in the hope that it will be heard and used meaningfully." Future 17: Global Innovation Challenge is an immersive online course that challenges you to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with a partner organization. Instructed by Clinical Professor Mary Jane Parmentier and Assistant Research Professor Nicholas Weller from the @asu_sfis, students have the opportunity to engage in international collaboration to develop real solutions that will be utilized by partner organizations.

Examples from previous sessions include sustainable farming, biotechnology and healthcare, marine biodiversity, education and many more.

Chandler Escalante, @asucollegeofglobalfutures alum, was recently named the Workforce Practitioner of the Year by the Arizona Association for Economic Development! The recognition honors his work in developing the city of Chandler's workforce pipeline, Chandler Career Center.

Escalante works as the workforce development project manager for the Economic Development Division at the city of Chandler. Chandler Career Center hosts over 140 local Chandler companies to connect employers directly with local talent across industry clusters including advanced manufacturing, aviation and aerospace, health care and more.

“This recognition reflects the work our team has accomplished in creating a new program that provides meaningful benefits for both job seekers and employers,” said Escalante.

🎓Bruno Atieh is the Spring 2026 Outstanding Graduate and PhD Charter Award recipient for @asu_sfis!

Atieh’s dissertation, “Surviving Hunger: How Adolescents Cope with Hunger Amid Conflict and Aid Decline in Lebanon,” emerged from the intersection of his experiences to bear witness to the devastating consequences of armed conflict and insufficient humanitarian aid.

Now that he has completed his PhD in innovation in global development, Atieh will continue working with World Vision’s global team on humanitarian policy and advocacy.

Meet Zoe Winick! 🎓🌟

Winick will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in innovation in society and is the spring 2026 outstanding undergraduate for @asu_sfis!

Winick has explored various paths and opportunities while at @arizonastateuniversity, including a three-month Sustainability Undergraduate Research Experience program in Lombok, Indonesia, to research sustainable farming practices.

With a bright future, Winick will continue her studies at ASU through the accelerated Master of Science in global technology and development program offered by SFIS.

Caitlin Clark is an @asuschoolofsustainability student at the @asucollegeofglobalfutures and an intern for the @solar_spell Initiative, a non-profit promoting global access to education.

SolarSPELL was recently selected in the Social Impact category for TIME's list of Best Inventions of 2025. As a SolarSPELL Intern, Caitlin is developing skills in communication, project planning, and innovation.
