“I feel better now than I felt 10 years ago.”

Chris Clifton was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease seven years ago. Today, she continues to hike, walk and attend spin classes while navigating the disease’s changing demands.

At ASU, researchers are studying how strenuous exercise may support brain health, along with new ways to detect Parkinson’s earlier and replace the dopamine-producing neurons it destroys.

More than 324,000 women and men in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re highlighting how ASU Biodesign researchers and collaborators are working to better understand, detect and treat the disease.

Their work includes studying treatment-resistant triple-negative breast cancer, building tumor-on-chip models, testing combinations of existing drugs and developing blood tests that may find signs of cancer left behind after treatment.

Researchers are even exploring whether engineered bacteria could seek out tumors and deliver anticancer material.

Some of these findings have been published, while other projects are still in the early stages. Swipe to explore five examples of breast cancer research at ASU Biodesign. by @asu_sols

Meet Viktor, a biological sciences alumnus from The College’s School of Life Sciences.

Viktor took his interest in ocean research beyond the classroom by getting involved in research with faculty. Along the way, he gained hands-on experience, developed new skills and found opportunities to apply what he was learning in new settings. 🐠🌊

That journey eventually took him to Bermuda, where he put his research experience to work in the field and learned alongside other researchers.

What if carbon captured from the air could be used to grow something useful? 🌱

School of Life Sciences professor and ASU Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory scientist, Wim Vermaas is exploring how air-captured CO2 can support the cultivation of algae and cyanobacteria, tiny photosynthetic organisms that can be used to make fuels, chemicals, proteins, pigments and other valuable products.

The team’s rotating-belt system uses polymers that capture CO2 when dry and release it when wet, delivering carbon directly into the liquid where algae and cyanobacteria grow. Early tests, including a pilot-scale outdoor system at the Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) in Mesa, show the approach can work beyond the lab. 🔬

The research is still in the proof-of-concept stage, but it reflects the kind of interdisciplinary, solutions-focused science happening across the School of Life Sciences and ASU: asking how discovery can help shape more sustainable systems for the future. 🌎

What did the Jurassic actually sound like? 🌿

A new research study co-authored by SOLS Hojun Song and PhD student Jackson Linde helps reconstruct the calls of ancient insects from fossilized wings.

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study reveals that Jurassic forests were filled with diverse acoustic signals, including ultrasound, about 165 million years ago. The findings suggest that some insects were producing ultrasonic sounds long before bats evolved, raising new questions about how and why these communication systems emerged. 🔊

ASU’s contribution helped place those ancient sounds into evolutionary context by reconstructing the family tree of crickets and katydids using large-scale genomic data from about 150 living species.

By combining paleontology, genomics, biomechanics, computer modeling and evolutionary biology, researchers are bringing scientists closer to understanding a lost soundscape, one fossil wing at a time. 🦗

We're going a little batty over the ASU-led @earthbiogenome's contributions to a breakthrough on bats. 🦇

Scientists have struggled for decades to answer some of the most fundamental questions about bat evolution, but a massive new study involving @arizonastateuniversity researchers shines some light on their mysterious origins.

The results? Bats most likely originated in Europe about 65 million years ago before spreading across the world.
