Sample House presents Out of Office*

Please join us for a casual evening of connection between emerging designers working across environments and objects.

In addition, this evening includes an open call for recent work from NYC-based designers working across environments and objects.

Submissions will be reviewed and a curated selection will be featured during the evening.

Works should be small to medium tabletop scale and delivered by the maker.

Submit materials via email to library@samplehouse.nyc with the subject line: “Out of Office Submission”

Submissions should include:

1. First and last name
2. Email address
3. Title of work
4. A brief description
5. Approximate dimensions
6. Link to portfolio/website/social media, etc. (optional)

Selected participants will be notified by the week of June 22nd, with works to be delivered on site by June 29th.

The Hemlock Lamp explores the overlap between sheet metal fabrication and fiber arts.

Inspired by cross stitching, embroidery, and garment construction, the lamp treats steel panels like textile pattern pieces. Each panel is laser cut with a geometric floral motif, translating the softness of stitched ornamentation into the industrial language of metalwork. The flat panels interlock to form a three-dimensional facade, which, along with a mulberry paper shade, diffuse the light within.

The name Hemlock refers both to the idea of hemming, a technique used to finish edges in both textile and sheet metal manufacturing, and to the interlocking construction of the lamp itself. It also nods to the hemlock flower, echoing the abstract floral pattern repeated throughout the steel panels.

aluminum, steel fasteners

the dimple side table is a study in proportion, texture, and material honesty. machined from solid aluminum, the tabletop features a soft, concave “dimple” pressed into the surface, a subtle interruption that invites touch and plays with light as it travels across the surface.
