A recent episode of "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" (@lastweektonight) examined the state of U.S. higher education and included my comments on the vital contributions universities make as the “invisible hand” behind American innovation and competitiveness.

America’s energy needs are growing rapidly, and meeting them will require both new technologies and a workforce prepared to deploy them at scale.

@arizonastateuniversity is joining Purdue University (@lifeatpurdue) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (@utknoxville) to launch the New Nuclear Academic Consortium. Together, we will expand nuclear fluency beyond traditional nuclear engineering, preparing students across engineering disciplines to help build, operate and scale the next generation of nuclear energy technologies.

The future of nuclear energy is already taking shape. Our job is to make sure America has the people, knowledge and capacity to lead it. “We hold these truths to be self-evident...”

Walter Isaacson says that is the beginning of the greatest sentence ever written, and our conversation last week explored why its promise still matters 250 years later.

The American experiment is an extraordinary innovation, built around ideas of self-governance, equality and liberty, and the rule of law. As Americans, we are responsible for moving those concepts forward.

It was a pleasure to sit down with Jon Meacham for a thoughtful conversation about America at 250, the lessons of our history and the work still ahead.

One idea that stayed with me is that the American experiment has always been a work in progress. As we mark 250 years, understanding our history in all its complexity is essential to thinking about the country we want to become.

Recently, higher education, government and industry came together in Washington, D.C., to help launch the new national Foundry School.

The work now is about turning that collaboration into an opportunity for students.

At @arizonastateuniversity, we have built significant capabilities in advanced manufacturing, engineering education and industry-connected research. Through the Foundry School, our students will have opportunities to learn directly from the people designing, building and scaling advanced manufacturing enterprises.

This is what higher education needs to do: create opportunities, connect people and ideas, and prepare thinkers to help shape what comes next.

The hats made it to London, along with quite a few Sun Devils.

What a week. We celebrated the opening of ASU London and a new chapter in our commitment to engaging globally, then watched Wembley Stadium fill with maroon and gold as @sundevilfb brought home a 24-17 win over Kansas.

It was remarkable to see the @arizonastateuniversisty community bring its energy and spirit to London, and a fitting way to mark an important week for the university.

And, for the record, I think we made the right call on the hat.
