WHICH BAT ARE YOU? 🦇 Let us know in the comments. For science.

Most people probably don’t realize there are more than 1,500 bat species around the world. Together, they account for 1 in 5 living mammals.

Some catch fish. Some pollinate desert plants. Some build shelters from leaves. Others can hear an insect’s footsteps. Nature contains an incredible amount of variety, even within one branch of the family tree.

ASU researchers and the ASU-led Earth BioGenome Project contributed to the largest combined bat genome and fossil study ever undertaken.

This batty research can help scientists study the genes behind flight, echolocation, longevity and disease resistance. It can also support bat conservation and could eventually inform research into human aging and immunity.

Swipe to meet eight bat species, and find your bat personality for October! 🦇 by @asuresearch

Fire damage doesn’t stop when the flames are out.

Fires leave lasting impacts on the land. With burned-up root systems comes soil erosion, and carbon-rich ashes can be the perfect fuel for invasive plants. These factors can lead to additional damage like landslides and through entire ecosystems out of balance.

But there’s hope thanks to two undergraduate researchers taking on the challenge.

Henry Nakaana and Lune Martin are exploring how mycelium, the underground root systems of fungi, can help land recover faster from fires. These root systems can grow quickly and function as scaffolding for soil, while attracting nutrients that native plant species need to thrive.

Now, they’re working with Arizona fire officials to test how the mycelium grows in soil from areas impacted by fire.

This natural, safe and cost-effective solution could transform wildfire-recovery efforts. Way to go Henry and Lune!

Sorry to disappoint, but Edson (@entrepreneurasu) isn’t looking for love. 💔

Because this account has a name in the title, we receive A LOT of fake romance messages. They may seem funny or obvious, but they demonstrate a tactic scammers use every day: triggering emotion before you have time to think.

Romantic interest, exciting prizes and urgent requests can all push you to act quickly or overlook warning signs.

If a message feels too good, too urgent or too emotionally loaded to be true, pause and verify before responding.

A promise of love. A growing connection. Then, a request for money.

For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, ASU psychologist Thomas Talhelm explains how scammers build trust and why warning signs can be harder to recognize when you’re emotionally invested.

His advice: Talk it through with someone you trust. Sometimes, saying the situation out loud can help you recognize red flags.

“I feel better now than I felt 10 years ago.”

Chris Clifton was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease seven years ago. Today, she continues to hike, walk and attend spin classes while navigating the disease’s changing demands.

At ASU, researchers are studying how strenuous exercise may support brain health, along with new ways to detect Parkinson’s earlier and replace the dopamine-producing neurons it destroys.

Something seem phishy? 🎣

Before you click a link in a text or email, look for these red flags:

🚩 Suspicious or unfamiliar links
🚩 Spelling and grammar errors
🚩 Vague greetings like “Dear customer”
🚩 Pressure to act immediately
🚩 Threats of fines, fees or other consequences
🚩 Promises of prizes, refunds or easy money

But remember: AI is helping scammers create more convincing messages, so perfect spelling and professional branding do not guarantee something is legitimate.

Slow down, avoid the provided link and verify the message through an official website, app or phone number.

Ibogaine research is entering a new stage in Arizona. 🔬

With support from a $5 million state grant, Barrow and ASU researchers are preparing one of the first U.S. clinical trials of its kind to study ibogaine’s potential for people living with PTSD, depression and addiction.

Researchers hope to enroll the first participant in 2027, using brain imaging, standardized assessments and lab tests to examine ibogaine’s potential benefits and safety.

GOTCHA! 🤪

We’ve noticed more brands using surprise QR code stunts like this. But from a cybersecurity perspective, scanning unfamiliar codes isn’t the best habit. It could put you at risk of “quishing,” QR code phishing.

Quishing uses QR codes to direct people to fake websites designed to steal passwords, payment details or other personal information.

Treat unfamiliar QR codes like suspicious links. Check who posted the code, preview the URL and verify where it leads before opening the link.

“I was so excited to finally meet you, but my card isn’t working. Can you book the ticket? I’ll pay you back ❤️”

Scammers can use the promise of love to build excitement about a future together. Those positive emotions can make details that don’t add up easier to overlook.

For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, ASU psychologist Thomas Talhelm explains how positive emotions can affect our attention to warning signs.

His advice: Talk it through with someone you trust and stay open to their concerns. Sometimes, saying the situation out loud can help you notice what you’ve been missing.
