deep in the heart of Brazil, where the very foundation of Brazilian culture was founded and persisted despite years of colonial suppression in an effort to whitewash Brazil and ensure a dominate European presence over the increasing influence of African cultures from Africans brought over during the slave trade. All of the practices and cultural heritage that make Brazil a beautiful and unique country, samba dance, music, grandiose carnival costumes, Afro-Brazilian cuisine, and capoeira martial arts were persecuted and criminalized. Before carnival became the colorful and eccentric festivity that is is recognized as today, the concept was brought over by the Portuguese as an opportunity to revel before the catholic tradition of Lent began, setting off 40 days of fast and reflection. At the time, carnival celebrations were reserved for upper class Brazilians of European descent, and when Afro-Brazilians incorporated some of their heritage into these traditions, they were demeaned for it. Musicians were arrested and had their instruments destroyed for gathering in celebration, and any African influence was immediately illegitimized, only for these practices to later be the very pride and soul of Brazilian culture.Wandering the cobblestone streets of Salvador is like transversing a different era of time, yet I’ve never felt more present in each moment and enveloped in a deeply spiritual amour propre. Despite the beauty of their colorful, peeling inter coats, the longstanding Portuguese architecture are a constant reminder of a painful history, but the sound of bossa nova and the image of black bodies that ravish the streets between them stands as a testament to African pride and resilience.
