Notes of the Astonished

“…Birds lift off from the willow and fly past with wild cries…”

Kleist shudders. Gertrude touches his palm…
They know they do not want contact. But pity, compassion for the suppressed language of their bodies? They mourn their bodies, constrained by the rigid uniform of religious customs… parts of their own bodies… And their secret excesses they commit only in the name of destroying these shackles…

They stand face to face… they see the sky above one another’s heads, each other’s sky… Clouds drift… Without embarrassment they see one another… naked gazes… oblivion, self-forgetting…

Her smile, his answering smile: ironic.
— Let’s pretend it’s a game.
— Even if it’s a deadly honest game—
— You know that? — I know it too.
— Don’t come too close — don’t go too far…
— Hide yourself — reveal yourself.
— Forget what you know — remember everything…
…Naked skin, uncovered features — here is my face — here is your face.

Descending, drawing nearer to the earth — they are different.
Ascending, rising into the sky — they are alike…
