Matthias Bitzer
Tante Ente am Tonsee

Currently on view in SUR REAL REAL at LOHAUS GALLERY.

Matthias Bitzer works across painting, sculpture, drawing, and collage to construct multilayered visual narratives that explore how identity, history, and reality are formed, perceived, and continuously reconfigured.

His practice opens spaces within spaces—psychological, historical, and symbolic realms in which multiple perspectives and truths coexist.

Through complex connections between historical personalities, references to modernism and contemporary history, and autobiographical elements, Bitzer constructs intricate visual constellations that investigate memory, authorship, and the instability of historical narratives.

Often drawing on figures such as Berthold Brecht, Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya, or Emily Dickinson, he treats these protagonists not as subjects of representation but as points of departure for broader reflections on the porous boundaries between fiction and reality, past and present, abstraction and figuration.

Rather than offering fixed meanings, Bitzer’s works unfold as open systems of associations.

Through layered spatial compositions and symbolic references, they reveal the fragility of singular narratives and invite viewers to navigate the hidden structures that shape perception, identity, and collective memory.

The title “Tante Ente am Tonsee” deliberately opens a different space of interpretation.

If the title were Portrait with a Double Face, the image would immediately invite a psychological reading. Tante Ente am Tonsee, by contrast, opens an entirely different space. It evokes childhood, family mythology, summer, and a place known only to a few. It feels almost like a private password. by @atelier_bitzer
