A variable-depth beam is supported by bundles of small-diameter circular columns, whose density and spacing vary according to the structural demands. The varying inclinations of columns contribute to the lateral stability of the structure by creating efficient load paths for the transfer of horizontal forces to the foundations. This strategy of numerous slender supports reduces excavation and foundation works – minimising the impact on the surrounding forest. taken in Fribourg, Switzerland by @atelieramont

Cemetery and Funeral Hall, Podebrady, Nymburk, CZ, 2025; Building: 560 m², Landscape: 12,140 m²; Competition; Architecture + Landscape: @atelieramont, Basel; Collaborator(s): Dawid Roszkowski; Images (exterior): mukkō, Warsaw; Client: Public (Municipality of Podebrady)

A ceremonial hall connects to the existing north-south axis of the old cemetery as well as a new pathway running from east to west. A forecourt contains small flower meadows, providing dignified spaces for the scattering of ashes. In the garden, benches invite quiet reflection and contemplation. An airy roof rises upwards, gracefully welcoming all who enter from the east. Visitors can gather here before proceeding inside, sitting on the edge of a fountain that emerges from the garden wall. They then continue together along the covered path toward the entrance. After the ceremony, mourners may pass by the body of the deceased and exit through a narrow courtyard with trees leaning over the walls, although never accessing the garden seen behind the casket. Finally, they return once again to the forecourt with the fountain and flowers. The newly planned cemetery area to the east offers a range of burial options: traditional graves with coffins, columbaria, urn burials in ground plots, and the possibility of scattering ashes beneath a memorial forest. taken in Czech Republic by @atelieramont

Volumes are arranged beneath a roof, supporting it and being shaded in turn. Rooms or terraces are defined by massive walls, glass panels, open mesh parapets or only platforms. Freestanding columns are placed out in the landscape where the roof cannot be supported by the walls of the enclosed rooms. At the highest point, a water tower stores and distributes water collected from the roof. Some rooms face the sea, some the hills above.

Towards the west, the building steps down from five to four storeys, with a recessed top floor in response to the public square and the new urban development opposite the Dorfmatt. Along the north side, the volume is recessed in two places – in the centre and at the eastern end – following the property boundaries. The north facade has one further exception: the cafeteria projects outward at ground-floor level, allowing daylight to enter from three sides as well as through rooflights. A generous, tall entrance canopy on the square creates an inviting gesture marking the building's centre. The square is framed by a stair and ramp to the west (providing access to the sports fields), the Dorfmatt sports hall to the south, a row of deciduous trees to the east, and the new school building to the north. Fountains provide attractive focal points and enhance the quality of the public space. Despite the relatively large volume of the building, this carefully composed spatial enclosure creates a welcoming scale for the entrance area.

After ten years of intermittent searching and studies, I have purchased a house in Sardinia.

Located in an inland hill town, a wedge-shaped, elongated volume borders narrow streets on three sides. I was attracted to the archetypal house face – stretched vertically – combined with an absurdly proportioned plan. A radical transformation is being developed to intensify its inherent qualities – the thick masonry perimeter will manage an expansive interior landscape of varying levels. The gable roof is to be restructured so that its full length of twenty meters can be experienced as a continuous space, while much of the intermediate slab below will be removed. Modest openings are planned in the currently windowless northern wall. The house is intended as a refuge for friends, family, and guests.

Thanks to Taiko Amont @taikoamont for the gracious support.
