🏢 What makes an office truly sustainable?

An energy label C is a starting point, not the finish line. The real question is:

Will your office still be attractive to tenants ten years from now?

A future-proof office is about more than energy efficiency. It’s about creating the right environment for people to work, connect and thrive. Tenants are looking for a space that’s just right, both in terms of location, indoor climate, flexibility, energy costs and ambience.

An office that people actually enjoy working in, remains more attractive to tenants and retains its value better. That is why sustainability does not begin with solar panels, a heat pump or a sustainability label. At atelier PRO, we believe it starts with an integrated approach, where architecture, technology and the way people use a building come together.

Our studio often works on the renovation and sustainability upgrade of offices, and always with a focus on quality, user experience and future value. At EDGE Stadium for client @edgetechnologies, we discovered that even a building that was once considered a model of sustainability can be reinvented through reuse, new materials and a different way of working.

How do you make people feel at home in a residential care centre?

By making it truly feel like home.

We recently completed the new interior of De Baton, part of @saffiergroep It’s a special project for us because this is where the story of the Beeldkwaliteitsplan (BKP), a design quality framework, we developed for the organisation began in 2020.

Six years ago, we created a vision for Saffier on how residential care environments could be designed differently — with attention to residents and staff, and one key principle: creating environments where people feel comfortable, welcome and at home.

That vision was first developed for Maestro, a complex that was still under construction. Today, within this complex, we have delivered our pilot project: De Baton.

For the new KOW building, we designed the interior and made architectural adjustments to open up spaces and strengthen connections. Because Saffier’s focus extends beyond its residents to the surrounding neighbourhoods.

De Baton is more than a place to live. It includes a restaurant, physiotherapy space, hairdresser, open-plan office and workspaces on the residential floors — creating opportunities for people to meet and interact.

Materials, colour and lighting bring warmth and atmosphere. Signage and wall graphics connect the interior to The Hague, while familiar landmarks help residents orient themselves and feel connected to their surroundings and history. And that’s when you realise why these choices matter.

One resident, who had initially become very withdrawn, has completely blossomed. They now visit the restaurant independently, stop for a chat and even venture into the neighbourhood.

It’s a powerful reminder of how much our surroundings can influence our wellbeing, and why creating places that support connection, independence and belonging matters.

🎉 Completed Projects call for a party! And last Friday, we celebrated the opening of Brede School De Roosmolen in Genderen—a new shared home for primary school Het Fundament, childcare centre Camelot and the Altena Library.

Designed as an open, colourful and welcoming building, De Roosmolen is more than a school: it is a place for learning, meeting and connecting, and a new heart for the neighbourhood.

Its playful form and sloping roof fit naturally into the surrounding houses while at the same time giving the building its own distinctive identity as a school. Inside, warm wood, soft tones and subtle accent colours create a welcoming atmosphere, with plenty of natural light and a variety of spaces for learning, working, playing and socialising.

At the heart of the design is a balance between connection and individuality. Different spaces have their own character, yet flow naturally into one another, creating opportunities for collaboration, interaction and community.

The result is a warm and inviting place for pupils, teachers, parents and the wider neighbourhood. ✨

It is official. The team of @atelierPRO.nl and @LOLALandscapeArchitects won the Trinity Campus architectural competition and has been appointed as the design lead for the new Trinity Private School Campus.

According to Andrey Bordyuzhan, the Head of Growth at @Trinity_Cyprus Private School, the proposal found the right balance between openness and privacy, community and independence, a large campus and a human scale.

Rather than imposing a school onto the site, the proposal is conceived as an extension of the landscape itself. Its form and organization respond to the terrain, greenery, views, daylight, and local climate. A school that accommodates growth while creating an environment that is personal, inclusive, and centered on each student.

Last week we were finally able to share the news: together with @lolalandscapearchitects , we won the design competition for the new @trinity_cyprus Private School campus in Limassol, Cyprus.

A wonderful achievement that we’re incredibly proud of – and what better way to celebrate this than together? That’s why last Friday, the LOLA team visited our office to round off their office trip to The Hague. On to Limassol! 🥂 by @atelierpro.nl

Ever wanted to step inside one of Leiden’s most remarkable historic buildings? 🏛️

The Academiegebouw on Rapenburg is home to the Netherlands’ oldest university and five centuries of architectural history. Look closely and you’ll even find the signatures of Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and King Willem-Alexander side by side on the wall.

This weekend, you can explore it for yourself during Open Monument Day!

Commissioned by Leiden University, atelier PRO refurbished the Academy Building between 2002 and 2009. A unique collection of listed buildings from different periods, the complex brings together architectural styles from Gothic to Neo-Gothic.

With our refurbishment we improved the routing, added a canopy over the courtyard to create a central hub, and modernised the building’s functions.
Atelier PRO was also responsible for the interior design of the ceremonial spaces. Studio Leon Thier Architecture & Interior designed the interior of the Faculty Club.

Together with restoration architects Veldman Rietbroek Smit, atelier PRO carefully balanced contemporary interventions with the building’s historic character.

Curious? The Academiegebouw is opening its doors to the public on Saturday 12 September from 12 noon–5 pm and Sunday 13 September from 10 am–5 pm.

Back to the office! 🏢

The holidays are over, and we’re spending more time indoors again. That makes a healthy indoor climate more important than ever: fresh air, comfortable temperatures and plenty of natural light.

But a healthy office is about more than technical performance.

It’s also about how a building supports people in their daily routines. It’s about creating spaces where people can focus, collaborate, meet and feel comfortable. Because a truly healthy office isn’t simply a building with good air quality and daylight - it’s a place where people enjoy spending time.

In our office transformations, the quality of the working environment starts with what is already there. A strong architectural structure, a clear spatial layout and a meaningful connection with the surroundings can provide the foundation for a basis for a healthy future.

Atelier PRO specialises in the renovation and sustainability upgrades of offices, with a focus on architectural quality and user experience.

Recent projects include Utrecht Central Plaza, where we worked with @ten_brinke and @cbre_netherlands to give an unremarkable office building a new identity and a heart. The building will soon become the new headquarters of @asnbank.

At @metradenhaag, above The Hague Central Station, we are working on behalf of nsstations and BNP Paribas Real Estate to restore and enhance the appeal of this Hague icon.

A future-proof Town Hall where restoration, transformation, circularity and contemporary architecture come together — while preserving the rich historical layers of the building and creating a renewed sense of unity.

That is the ambition behind the renovation and extension of Veendam Town Hall for the @gemeenteveendam

The complex brings together different architectural periods, with the nineteenth-century listed Town Hall at its heart. The challenge? To create a modern, safe and sustainable civic building without losing the character and heritage of the existing architecture.

The listed building will be carefully restored, while the newer wings are transformed and extended. Colour, materials and detailing connect the different parts of the building — including, for example, new red façades that complement the historic brickwork.

Circularity plays an important role too. The façades from 2008, which are still in good condition, will be retained, while the 1980s façades will be rebuilt using the same composition. Perforated panels inspired by the landscape and history of the Oude Veenkoloniën add another layer, subtly connecting the architecture to Veendam’s past – making this a project where history, identity and the future come together.
