POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
hi!

i’m aneesa, and i teach, write and perform the written word

i created this space to take my teaching and love of books beyond just my students; expect to find everything literary here - from words of the day, reviews, screen and stage adaptations, to full on literary commentary

i teach all types of english: from 11-18 year olds, to esl and ielts examinations; i’ve wanted to do this since i was a teen, and i still love it. i have moved my classroom from in person to the online space in order to reach and impact more people

i also love helping other creators with their words; repurposing content for them into both long and short form in order to engage and grow their own community

and i have also gone back to my performing roots & bringing life to words on the page; i’m a voice actor, who loves to add that third and final dimension to the written word

this page is dedicated to understanding others and ourselves better through literacy, nuance, and a communal love for the written word

welcome :) by @atexturedword

tell me, what’s your favourite library you’ve ever visited?

visiting the long room library was a highlight from dublin; it was grand and you could feel the history soaked into the pages of the book

definitely worth a visit if you’re ever visiting dublin

…i’m clearly still learning how to fit captions properly on the screen! but documenting the struggle along the way is a part of my process 😅

**pt.2 tomorrow as YES (!) i’m also still learning how to keep a reel under 3 mins! 😅

send to anybody who wishes to give themselves a new vocabulary wardrobe this year!

this series will be us focusing on extracting 5 words from our book of the week and exploring them in context.

i was inspired by accounts such as @donnie.jackson.english and @wod.cast in bringing more vocabulary to people who may otherwise feel that they don’t have the time to sit down and learn new words through reading.

after seeing all of the news over the last few weeks, maintaining and building upon our existing literacy and comprehension rates almost seems like a personal challenge.

but i will forever be passionate about increasing the quality of people’s lives through the power of words, and their ability to invoke change within ourselves and in how we relate to one another. call me wildly sentimental or idealist, but i’ll happily take it.

i know i like to focus on individual books on this account, but i figured a nice little stack couldn't hurt every now and then.

3 books: one centred around loneliness in the 21st century, another...loneliness again, but in the 19th century, and the last one all about human vanity - asking what lengths would you go to in order to hold on to beauty and desire forever?

i did find it interesting that the first is about a very real 57 year old human; the second - a creation that is referred to as a monster; with the third being a bit of a hybrid of the first two?! this was purely coincidental :)

let me know if you have been reading anything recently

@curve_leicester x educating rita x taste

watching this play was a stark reminder that to hoard and covet ‘taste’ purely for the sake of ascending through the social ranks, may not actually amount to very much when it comes to nurturing and nourishing the delicate nature of a human soul

that knowing how to truly look after ourselves may involve a more complex balance of both aspiration alongside a solid sense of being grounded and ultimately knowing who we are

a wonderful play; on at the curve theatre in leicester until sat 17th october

@curve_leicester x sylvia x equality
•

the show @sylviamusicaluk is such an innovative way of revising a very real and true story - the impact of which we still feel today, even if we remain unaware of the extent of the fight that went into securing women the vote in england during the earlier part of the 20th century

from the dance to the singing to the rap and hip hop; this revisionist approach actually ends up adding even deeper unspoken layers to what was already always about exclusion and marginalisation

emmeline and sylvia pankhurst’s story bursts to life on stage in a way that wouldn’t have been conceived of before kate prince’s re-telling, as we’re invited into the world of the suffragettes and the suffragist movement

‘sylvia’ culminates its tour in november at london’s royal albert hall :) by @atexturedword

what a season of amazing theatre

i’ll be posting the remaining 3 reviews soon; but i wanted to make space to say what may be obvious to some; theatre is truly incredible

watching it and feeling galvanised after - has never left me - not since my mum took me to my first professional production of andrew lloyd webber’s ‘cats’ at 13 years old. it was what then saw me acting in theatre across the next 8 years. i have loved and will continue to love everything about it

the 4 plays i’ve watched across these last couple months have tackled big issues such as race, gender, and class - all with their own unique storytelling and incredible casts

@nationaltheatre brought us their play on race and journalism and how those two meet inside the power dynamics of a newsroom

@mockingbirdplayuk had us in the deep south of america during the 1930s, highlighting how the darker sides of some people can see purity and innocence vanquish off the face of the earth

and @curve_leicester brought 2 incredible productions - the musical ‘sylvia’ & willy russel’s famous play ‘educating rita’; one focused on women gaining the right to vote in england during the early 20th century, the other took us to the more northern part of england several decades later, where 1 working class woman seeks a life of education in order to gift herself freedom and choices outside her current life

what united all 4 plays was the relentless pursuit of equality, freedom and justice; all 4 plays did so in their own way - beautifully

to the power of theatre; to oral storytelling that continues to both challenge and unite us
