Yesterday, I told my friend Marina that I wanted something different, something out of the ordinary, even unconventional. And I suggested this particular café, which I had walked past so many times but had never had the chance to sit in. I told her, «Let’s go to that chess café in Exarchia,» of course not to play chess (I don’t like it), but for the vibes. And it was exactly what I had expected.

A place that felt completely from another era, with not a single modern element—even the fan was ancient. When I walked in, the owner told me they only served Greek coffee and frappé, so I ordered a double Greek coffee, medium sweet. Marina had a lemonade. The bill: €5. I was especially struck by the beautiful mosaic floor, the marble tables, the wooden chessboards, the photographs and posters, and the atmosphere of the café, which isn’t just an ordinary café, but a café for intellectuals. Many people were there to read their books or work on their laptops, and it really was the perfect place for that, as it was so quiet and cozy.

The owner asked me twice if we were going to play chess, and both times I answered, «No,» and he reassured me that after 5:00 p.m. the regular chess players arrive.

Marina and I talked for hours in an environment that didn’t feel pretentious at all, and one that actually inspires you to confide in someone and open up. Personally, I told her something that I’ve shared with very few people, and I think the sense of calm I felt really helped me do that.

I highly recommend it. 🫶

Το προηγούμενο Σάββατο ήθελα να βγω σε ένα μαγαζί λίγο διαφορετικό, λίγο πιο ήσυχο, με άλλους ρυθμούς, χαλαρό και ο αδερφός μου μου πρότεινε αυτό το πραγματικό hidden gem στο Παγκράτι. Σε ένα στενό ανάμεσα στην πλατεία Βαρνάβα και την οδό Υμηττού, ένα κτίριο αρκετά παλαιό και με φινέτσα παλιάς Αθήνας, φιλοξενεί το @alogokrito , μια μπουάτ με χαμηλό φωτισμό, vintage διακόσμηση, διάφορους χώρους και μια πολύ ζεστή και φιλική εξυπηρέτηση. Πολύ καλές τιμές, μια υπέροχη αυλή με πολλά φυτά, ένα δωμάτιο privé αλλά και μια αίσθηση άκρως ρομαντική, πρόκειται για ένα μαγαζί ιδανικό για ένα όμορφο date ή για μια βραδιά με φίλους! Το προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα ✨

Every Saturday and Sunday after 10am, @10amapotheke opens its doors to the public for a unique coffee and pastries experience. Brutalist architecture, good and normally priced coffee, delicious pastries and a very calming atmosphere are only some of the most prominent features of the place, which is located in a quite off the beaten track location, very close to Metro Kerameikos station! Definitely worths a visit ✨

I have talked many times about how much I love this particular restaurant and how exceptional I consider the experience it offers. It’s not only the design objects that fill the space, nor the low lighting, candles and glass façade that create such a warm setting, or the wonderful jazz music playing in the background. It’s also the fact that, at this restaurant, the food is simply on another level.

The black truffle croquettes and the bites with tarama and bottarga (must try), the Athenian salad (excellent), the Gulf of Argos prawns with strawberry (a dish I always order), as well as the scorpionfish that I tried for the first time (with a wonderful buttery shellfish sauce, must try), all executed with delicate elegance and absolutely nothing unnecessary. I was also thrilled by the free-range chicken with truffle (I had no idea chicken could be this delicious), as well as the strip loin with mushroom sauce! Superior flavours that are definitely worth trying.

Desserts, as you know, are my weak spot, and this time I had the pleasure of trying four. A b s o l u t e l y a m a z i n g Paris-Brest with a velvety hazelnut cream and black truffle that took it to another level, perhaps the most beautiful Basque Cheesecake I have ever had, with forest fruit sorbet, and the two exceptional ice creams: chocolate with raspberry sorbet and vanilla with soft cookies! I truly have no words for such a wonderful culinary experience! I highly recommend it 🫶
