One of my favorite mystical moments of last weeks premiere with @rigaskamerkorisavesol
My piece “Ankunft” is about advent and the dawning hours between night and day. It is a huge privilege to both write for and sing in this amazing choir!

Thank you very much to @musicabaltica_intl for releasing my setting of Fricis Bārda’s “Lūgšana” (engl. Prayer). I’m very proud to be published alongside so many incredible composers. The piece was premiered this spring with @rigaskamerkorisavesol and it was performed once more by @europaeischer_kammerchor as part of my master graduation project “Elysia” in Germany this summer.

The Latvian text is absolutely beautiful and invites us to be more considerate with this planet and its inhabitants.

Here is an English translation:

May the earth feel no pain
when my feet walk upon it.
May no flower suffer
when children weave them into wreaths.
May it be easy for the spring
to cradle its waves of weeping
when the night is dark and long.
And that—if at all possible—not a single soul
remains without the sun’s light.

Throwback to our Choral Evensong project this May. The project choir around three young conductors from the Latvian music academy brought this centuries old Anglican tradition to the heart of Rīga, quite possibly the first time ever performed by a Latvian choir.

“Si Veriash” (English: If You Could See) is a children’s song that indirectly tells the story of the Sephardic Jews. This Jewish community lived on the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, particularly under Muslim rule, before being expelled from Spain in the aftermath of the Christian Reconquista at the end of the 15th century. Many Sephardic Jews subsequently migrated to the Ottoman Empire, where communities flourished for centuries, particularly in the Balkans and present-day Turkey. They preserved their Sephardic language, Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), which still bears a strong resemblance to Spanish.

In this particular song, the refrain changes to Turkish, telling the child: “Ben seni severim, çok seni severim” (English: I love you, I love you so much).

“Čičorlinkist” (engl. “waking the birds”) in its archaic sounds takes us to the shores of the baltic sea. This livonian folk song is about the spring awakening and connected to the idea that birds carry the spirits of our ancestors. It calls upon animals and humans to come back from a long winter’s hibernation. But only the fat fishes, peaceful animals and good children - the others may stay somewhere else. Once a powerful baltic tribe, today only a handful of people are speaking the Livonian language.

“Elysia” - that is my dream of what the world could be! A place of diversity, peace and love. You may find this a corny utopian fantasy, but for me it became a real thing in this concert in June!

Thank you to everyone who made this dream come true. I feel obliged to share it with all of you!

Thanks be to @dirigentreif and @europaeischer_kammerchor

Many thanks to @lainetabora and @voxiubilantis for this great collaboration.

„Klostera stāsti“ (engl. monastery stories) narrated the fate of a women’s monastery in Riga during the reformation time in 16th century. Laine reconstructed some unique gregorian chants from that monastery and reperformed them after nearly 500 years. I was happy to complement and contrast the women’s enemble with both electronical music and a Luther song based on gregorian chant.

It was also a tremendous pleasure to work alongside historian Andris Levāns and director @annaviduleja , who transformed this evening into a thought provoking, powerful performance.

Only a few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to contribute an arrangement to joint big band project of @jazz_conservatoireantwerp @codarts_jazz and @pop_jazz_hfmt_koeln

The Duruflé Suite is an arrangement of parts of the requiem by Maurice Duruflé. Written under the immediate impression of the Second World War it felt special sharing it with this great international band. I had inspiring few days in beautiful Rotterdam alongside great colleagues and many new friends.

Special thanks to @lennertbaerts_music and @brusselsjazzorchestra for organizing and leading the project.
