Stop wasting your time in generic PT 🛑

I know it might be in-network, but you could be saving your co-pay $$ and time by going to a provider who actually understands your goals and will perform the right tests and measures, and coaching to get you there.

If you’re a runner, your PT better be doing a running assessment on you;

Cyclists? Bike fitting, yup we do that too

if you’re a field and court athlete, there should be force production testing and single leg plyo/strength testing;

if you’re a CrossFitter there should be video and breakdown of the movement you’re having an issue with;

You get the idea; stop playing around with generic rehab specialists and find someone who gets you 🤘🏼

Meet Dr. Alyssa Dionisio, DPT 👋

If you’re an athlete working your way back from an ACL injury, Alyssa is someone you’ll want in your corner.

Alyssa has a particular interest in ACL rehab, post-op knee recovery, and return-to-sport training. She loves working with athletes, especially those who are eager to get back to their sport and are ready to put in the work to get there.

Because ACL rehab isn’t just about getting your knee to feel better. It’s about rebuilding strength, power, control, and confidence so you’re prepared for the demands of your sport.

Her approach combines individualized programming, strength and conditioning, movement assessments, and hands-on techniques to help bridge the gap between rehab and getting back on the field or court.

And she’s an athlete herself! Outside the clinic, you’ll find Alyssa running, strength training, playing soccer, or hanging out with her dog.

We’re excited to have her on the AEPT team!

If you’re recovering from an ACL injury or looking for a more performance-focused approach to getting back to sport, DM us to learn more about our return-to-sport rehab in San Diego.

Low back pain doesn’t mean you have to stop lifting, running, or training.

But it might mean your body needs a different approach to mobility, strength, and load management.

At Athletic Edge Physical Therapy in San Diego, we don’t just focus on reducing pain. We identify the strength, mobility, and movement deficits that may be limiting your ability to train at your best.

Here’s what low back pain rehab might look like:

1. Breathing & Pelvic Floor Coordination: Improving how your diaphragm, pelvic floor, and trunk muscles work together to manage pressure during lifting and exercise.

2. Thoracic Mobility: Addressing restrictions in your upper back that may affect your ability to rotate, reach, and move efficiently.

3. Trunk Strength & Control: Building the strength and coordination needed to tolerate higher loads and more demanding movements.

4. Progressive Strength Training: We progressively rebuild your capacity to squat, deadlift, run, and return to the activities you love.

Here’s the thing: Low back pain isn’t one-size-fits-all, and your rehab shouldn’t be either.

Our goal isn’t just to get you out of pain. It’s to help you build a stronger, more resilient body so you can get back to training with confidence.

Looking for sports physical therapy in San Diego? We’re here to help you bridge the gap between rehab and performance.

Yes! We treat male pelvic floor dysfunction here, and a big part of it is patient education and improving behaviors. Such as eating more fiber and increasing exercise can be a massive positive influence in Erectile dysfunction, crazy right?!

Pelvic floor plays a role in more than you might think—from sexual and urinary function to core stability and exercise.

Swipe through to learn how your pelvic floor may affect your training, recovery, and overall health.

Your pelvic floor plays a role in male sexual health.

Pelvic floor muscle weakness, excessive tension, or poor coordination may contribute to certain sexual symptoms, including erectile dysfunction and pelvic or penile pain.

Pelvic floor physical therapy may help when muscle dysfunction is a contributing factor. Sexual symptoms can have multiple causes, so proper medical evaluation matters.

Sexual dysfunction shouldn’t be ignored!

Your pelvic floor is part of your lifting mechanics.

During heavy lifts, the pelvic floor works alongside the diaphragm and abdominal muscles to coordinate intra-abdominal pressure and support trunk function.

Training isn’t just about how much weight you can move. Breathing, pressure management, and muscle coordination matter, too.

Not all groin or low back pain has the same cause.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can contribute to some cases of pelvic and groin pain and may coexist with low back pain. The hip, tendons, nerves, and spine can also be involved.

A thorough assessment helps identify the structures contributing to your symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Persistent pain deserves more than guesswork.

Pelvic floor physical therapy isn’t just about doing Kegels.

Depending on your symptoms and assessment, treatment may focus on relaxation, strength, coordination, breathing strategies, and functional movement.

The goal is to address what your body actually needs—not prescribe the same exercises to everyone.

Your pelvic floor is part of your overall health and performance.

Plantar Fasciitis👇

Plantar fasciitis causes pain in the heel and bottom of the foot due to irritation of the plantar fascia. Here are some exercises we prescribe to strengthen the foot muscles, improve arch support and stability, and help the foot better handle weight and movement to reduce stress on the plantar fascia.

Resisted great toe flexion: Strengthens the muscles that bend the big toe, helping support the arch and improve stability during push-off.

Toe yoga: Improves toe control and strengthens the small foot muscles that help support the arch and reduce stress on the plantar fascia.

Foot bridges: Trains you to maintain the foot tripod (base of the big toe, base of the little toe, and heel), improving arch stability and weight distribution.

Banded toe press RDL: Strengthens the foot muscles while challenging balance and control, helping the foot maintain its arch and handle load during movement.

🏃‍♀️ 3 drills to strengthen mid-stance in runners.

Mid-stance is where single-leg stability, pelvic control, and hip strength come together to help you run efficiently. Your body can absorb up to 3x your body weight during mid-stance with every step. This is a lot of force to control repeatedly.

If you’re looking to improve your control and stability during the stance phase of running, try adding these 3 drills to your strength routine 👇

1️⃣ Banded Barbell Lateral Toe Taps — Challenge single-leg stability and pelvic control while maintaining a strong stance leg. You can really challenge load here to match the impact demands of running.

2️⃣ Swiss Ball Captain Morgan’s — Build hip stability and lateral core strength to help control the pelvis during single-leg support.

3️⃣ Kneeling Side Plank Hip Abduction — Target the lateral hip and core stability to improve strength and control through the frontal plane.

🔥 The goal: Build strength and control on one leg so you can better manage the demands of every stride.

We mix a little bit of strength & conditioning, balance, and agility for returning to soccer after a knee injury.

You have to have a balanced mix of things to ensure a well rounded, successful rehab plan for the athlete.

If you only focus on strength, then you’re missing out on regaining the cognitive benefits with agility training; if you only focus on plyo and agility, then you’re missing out on building your engine with strength and conditioning; and you cannot miss out on the single leg eccentric training—ever.
