Well this season was a roller coaster of a season. I did not fill all of my Texas tags but I did get my target buck on the property that I hunt and with that I am happy. Had a couple close encounters with this deer leading up to the day I killed him on December 1st. On that morning it had been a slow morning hunting a nice funnel/pinch point with a very prominent fence crossing but as we all know that can change in the blink of an eye. I heard some running in the leaves to my right and seen 2 young bucks fighting. But they stopped moving and both kept looking behind them. I figured something else was there so I decided to hit the grunt call and he came running. He was at 60 yards in the brush and by the time I grabbed my bow and turned to draw he was at 20 and I stopped him at 12 yards slightly quartering to and settled my pin and pulled through the shot. He did not make it far, I seen him pile up in 30 yards. I hunted hard from the beginning of October for this deer and when I finally got this opportunity on him it was over in the blink of an eye. by @athomas2114

Well yesterday something pretty cool happened! I decided to go hunting in this spot I had a nice buck on camera and the wind was going to be marginal for me but perfect for the buck. The day prior to this the buck came through 45 minutes after last light. Then this morning he can through about an hr before legal shooting light so I knew he was in the area. I got in the tree around 3:30 pm and by 5:30 I had two does walk through at 10 yards. Then I thought the evening was shot when a couple really loud cows decided to walk through my spot as well. Today that was not the case though. This spot is a fence crossing from one property to the next and there is a spot where about 5 trails meet at this fence crossing. At about 7:00pm I heard something walking back behind me and immediately could tell it was a deer. It was very slow and seemed very deliberate with each step. It seemed like forever before he was close enough to see but at 7:18 I got a visual and he was close. It was the big 8 I was after and he walked out at 27 yards, gave me time to draw and even stopped on a dime when I tried to stop him. The shot felt great. It looked like a heart shot and I immediately wanted to see what the arrow looked like. But I resisted the urge and waited 30 mins before getting down to check. After checking the arrow I was excited but just 10 yards into the blood trail my stomach sank…I didn’t have good blood at all. So I backed out and took my gear back too the truck. I waited an hr and a half before beginning to track him. But without blood I could see his tracks. Then after 25 yards I started seeing a lot of blood and after 35 yards total I could see his antlers sticking up in the brush. The beast was dead and the reason the blood trail was weak was due to a chunk of heart filling the lower exit wound. To this day he is my best Texas buck and I am super thankful for the ability to hunt and for God blessing us with these amazing animals to help fill our freezers and provide pure healthy protein for my family! 🏹🏹🏹 taken in Texas by @athomas2114

We were leaving to go Indiana on the 16th so I asked my wife to let me go hunt the 15th and the morning of the 16th….reluctantly she was ok with it. I got to my spot on some public land at 2:30….by 4:30 I started seeing deer moving on the adjacent private property. Then at 4:55 I spotted this buck feeding on the hillside on the private property but the sun really prevented me from keeping eyes on him. I could make out deer on the hillside but couldn’t tell what they were. I knew I would be limited on time once the sun set but I would also be able to see to try and call this buck in. Once the sun set and I had 30 minutes to get it done I started rattling and got his attention…with a couple grunts and a doe in estrous bleat he headed my direction. Last legal shooting light was 6:18….at 6:08 I heard a clang on the fence and by 6:12 he was standing broadside at 18 yards. I shot and he made it about 30 yards before piling up. Super proud of this buck just due to the amount of pressure that land gets and the ability for the deer to just hangout on the adjacent private land. I called him in from over 300 yards away to 18 yards and the Hoyt RX-7 and Easton arrow tipped with the Valkyrie broadhead did the rest! This buck isn’t big by any means but I am definitely proud that I was able to harvest some good meat for my family and put in the work to earn it. by @athomas2114

We arrived back in Indiana on Sunday afternoon and I had decided to hunt a family property the next morning before venturing deeper into some public land later this week. So I decided to do an observation hunt up high in a tree stand that has been back there for years. I didn’t see or hear anything until about 9am when I heard a bunch of deer cruising down in the bottom by the creek but couldn’t see what they were and so around 11am I decided to get down and go check it out. I found a bunch of fresh rubs and scrapes heading into the single thicket on the property. So I picked a good tree and decided after lunch I would use my tree saddle and see what happens. I was fully nestled in my tree around 1:45 and didn’t hear anything until about 4:30. I decided to do a short rattling sequence and almost immediately heard a light grunt coming from behind me. It was a small 1 year old spike that got comfortable down wind of me eating acorns. About 5 minutes later I heard sticks breaking in the thicket in front of me and it sounded like a good size animal coming through. To my surprise it was two small does. They immediately noticed the spike behind me and decided they wanted to go to the other way. So a couple minutes later I heard some more brush braking off in the thicket so I did a few light grunts. Immediately got a loud grunt returned and he was walking in. His hair was standing up and his ears were laid back and he was after that spike. He came right across in front of me at 20 yards and stopped and let out another loud grunt and a snort weeze and the spike ran off but I let the RX-5 eat and the Easton coupled with a Muzzy Trocar made short work of this buck. He ran about 60 yards with an amazing blood trail and almost as fast as it started my hunt for a buck in Indiana was over. He isn’t my biggest but the way it all played out was just awesome and I’ve never had a buck come in grunting so loud. Couldn’t be happier with how the hunt went and the outcome. I’m thankful for God providing me the ability to take this deer and provide this meat for my family. by @athomas2114

I took some time to just take everything in after he came but our little Truett Anthony is here! He was born at 0014 on September 19th. One week before his big brother Archer’s bday. He wasn’t due till October 17th but God had other plans and thankfully everyone is perfectly healthy. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 this little fella is such a blessing and we can’t wait to see the little man he grows into. Thank you Lord for another healthy son and I pray you guide us in every decision we make for our children! Amen!🙌🏻 by @athomas2114
