THANK YOU 💛

To every coach, presenter and partner who joined us for the 2026 National Coaching Conference in Brisbane, thank you.

Over three days at the University of Queensland, we learned from world-class presenters, got hands-on in practical sessions on the track, swapped ideas in workshops and celebrated the coaches who make our sport what it is.

To every coach who attended: thank you for your time, your curiosity and your commitment to developing athletes at every level. You are the heart of Australian Athletics.

A huge thank you to our keynote speakers, Olympic champion Joanna Hayes and Bill Davoren, Director of High Performance Coach Development at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). Thank you also to all our presenters, workshop leads, panellists and practical session coaches for sharing their knowledge so generously.

To the Australian Athletics staff who brought NCC26 to life, whether you were on the ground in Brisbane or supporting from behind the scenes, thank you. And to everyone else who made it happen: our volunteers, venue and event staff, our photographers for capturing every moment, and the catering team who kept us fuelled all weekend.

Thank you to our partners for making NCC26 possible. Major partners: The University of Queensland, and Primal Thenics in partnership with Exxentric. Supporters: Play Our Way (an Australian Government initiative), BLACKROLL, HART Sport, Rekortan Tracks by Polytan, Propel Health and Brisbane Economic Development Agency.

And to everyone who followed along online and cheered us on from afar, thank you too. Everyone played a part in making this possible.

See you at the NCC 2027 👋

What separated the medallists at the 2026 Commonwealth Games wasn't their all-time best. It was their form this year.

Athletes who reached 99% of their season best won a medal 57% of the time. Below that line, only 32% did. Reaching current form nearly doubled the odds.

Here's why that's good news:

99% of season best is a target any coach can aim for, at any level and any event. Not a lifetime best you can only hope for, but a repeatable, current-form target you build a plan toward. And it's a floor, not a ceiling.
Nearly half the medallists went past their season best on the day, and six set a brand-new PB.

Swipe through for where form mattered most, who beat their best, and how to periodise for it.

Strength training cut running injuries by about two-thirds. Stretching alone cut them by 4%, and that wasn't statistically significant.

Every session in your week has a job. Strength builds resilience, recovery runs keep you moving between hard days, long runs build capillaries, and intervals only work if the design is right: runners held VO2max for 14 minutes in 15-second pieces, against about 6 in one continuous effort.

Name the job before you write the week. by @athscoachaustralia

Chris takes the stage today at the Australian Athletics Coaches Conference to break down the science and practical application of Flywheel Resistance Training (FRT) for athletic performance!
Whether you coach sprinters, distance runners, or multi-directional sport athletes, flywheel technology provides a dynamic, gravity-independent stimulus that traditional weight training cannot replicate.

Here is a quick breakdown of what Chris is covering in today’s session:
Ballistic Force Profiles & Eccentric Overload Unlike standard weights, flywheel systems utilize rotational inertia (I = m \cdot r^2) to store kinetic energy during concentric acceleration and return it as intense eccentric overload—simulating dynamic force profiles without high joint impacts.
📊 Proven Transfers to Running Performance Learn how flywheel loading directly enhances performance on the track, backed by research showing gains in running economy, jumping power, sprint capabilities, and overall endurance.
🛑 Deceleration, Braking & Injury Resilience Rapid horizontal deceleration requires absorbing extreme braking forces. Chris will highlight strategies for leveraging eccentric loading to build muscular stiffness and protect against hamstring strains, Achilles issues, and joint overload.
🔄 Autoregulation & Safe Loading Mechanics Because resistance dynamically auto-adjusts to match output on every single rep, athletes avoid traditional “sticking regions” and fatigue safely. Harness options also unload the spine, making high-intensity strength work accessible for athletes of all levels.
🏟️ Trackside Portability & High-Density Training Discover how portable, lightweight flywheel platforms let coaches deliver high-density strength, post-activation potentiation (PAP), and in-season maintenance directly on the track or field.

If you’re attending today, or would like Chris to attend your conference or organisation for a Flywheel workshop make sure to with Chris afterward to discuss bringing research-backed flywheel protocols to your athletes! 🙌
