@weedeaterband played at @southerncville last night and killed it. Incredible musicians and showmen. I will not not go anytime they find their way around these parts. Not a lot of photos taken as I was in the moment and just enjoying the music. I picked up one of their "Golden Girls" shirts from the merch table. Fantastic performance.

Shout out to @zekeband and @ugabugaband for opening.

I really needed that last night. Good to hear and feel that energy, be around "my peoples" and meet up with some friends. My only mistake was forgetting ear plugs. At my age going without is a bad idea. It's getting better but I've had a ringing in my ears all day.

We had a quick and friendly visit on the mountain this evening. Not an adult but not a cub either. Took a glance at us and then just strolled down the driveway.

Just me stirring up some grub for those that need it at @havencville for @tfkcville. My first time doing this sort of volunteer work and I really dug it. Look forward to doing it again.

This actually isn't a bad pic of me either. I look thin, healthy, vigorous and studly.

This has to be one of the coolest things I've seen in a bit: my son got a 3D printer for his birthday and he has been doing some experimenting with it. He came to me and asked if there was anything I wanted printed. I thought about it a bit and then said I'd love a mini-bust of my favorite philosopher and stoic, Marcus Aurelius.

He did a little research, he set up the machine and after nine nail-biting hours, he completed the print.

Absolutely amazing. Incredible tech. I love it.

Scored my ticket to @weedeaterband at The Southern on Oct. 16th!

I'm supremely busy for the rest of this year but I wasn't going to miss this show. Weedeater is one of my favorite doom metal bands who hail from Wilmington, NC one of my favorite places on earth. I also dig Dave "Dixie" Collins. He has quite the vocals and stage presence.

I saw them in 2022 when they played here in Cville at the now defunct and disgraced Champion Brewery. That show has to be in my Top 5 Favorite Shows I've seen. That was quite the night and quite the performance. I'm hoping for more in October.

@zekeband, @royalthunder and @yesmaamtheband are supporting and I look forward to hearing them.

Also, huzzah! for physical tickets and buying them locally at the @cvillejefferson box office to piss on Ticketmaster charges.

We have two Celeste Fig Trees in our gardens. I think the 'necks around here would call them "Sugar Figs." They are an incredibly hardy and pest and humidity resistant fruit tree which is now beginning to reach its peak. The figs produced are succulent and delicious. This past week I poured myself a cup of coffee and then immediately went out to harvest each morning. If it rained the day before the figs just explode in size.

I really need to gather ideas and figure out what to do with these. Just two trees produce an incredible amount. They thrive in Virginia and North Carolina. We planted a tree when we lived in Wilmington and it went nuts but didn't produce fruit before we were forced to leave. Strong trees. I need to learn more about them, but I'm thinking maybe fig jam.

And I'm thinking more fig trees.

So it has begun. Construction has begun on Gay Mountain of a new house for the extended family which puts us a step closer to my family becoming permanent residents on this land.

I know it needs to be done to make it happen, but losing all these trees has been absolutely heartbreaking to me. I've done a lot of traveling this year, traveled the farthest I've ever been in this country, from Virginia to the Yukon and I've personally seen the effects of climate change and our inability to properly be stewards to this planet. It's devastating and to lose these trees makes me sad. This isn't even mentioning how this might change the habits and habitats of the animals and birds here which I love.

But nature will reclaim what it will. We will be using the wood from the trees and the large stones we've unearthed for various projects. We will use as much as we can and we will preserve what we have left.

It will be the way of things here.

If you are a "leader" on any level in America and you are selling public lands...you are a tr8or. Those lands are not yours or yours to give. They are a sacred trust between the Americans of the past and the Americans of the future. They are a trust in the World we inhabit. We are stewards of this planet, not its conqueror. by @atkinback

What has it been? Two weeks since I got back from my Alaskan adventure? I've had little desire to post anything on anything recently. Part of me is still in Alaska.

I do want to share one of the pieces of Alaska I brought back home with me. I bought some small trinkets and a hat, but this is my favorite piece (calling it a souvenir cheapens it I think).

It is a stainless steel Ulu Knife with a Moose antler handle. It is a traditional all-purpose knife the Indigenous  people in Alaska and the Arctic have been using for thousands of years. I absolutely fell in love with these knives. I loved the history of them and their versatility. They can be used to finely chop herbs; to help gut and cut a whale or fillet and prepare a salmon.

I've begun using it in the kitchen and I find I can move quicker and do more precise cutting than using a kitchen knife. I could shred a head of lettuce in no time. Still have to use it on some chicken, fish or pizza.

I know, ulu knives these days are heavily pushed on the tourists. You can find them in various qualities in nearly every gift shop or even some jewelry stores up and down Alaska.  Reagan even got me an ulu knife for Father's Day. This type (pictured last) is meant more for display or if your kid wants to try it. Ridiculousy cheap everywhere up there. But it is lovingly displayed on my shelf to remind me of the Last Frontier. I don't care if I got hooked into something some consider touristy.

I love this knife.
