Blue Mountains Writers Festival was terrific. Toni Jordan’s talk was life-changing. Raw, tender and funny. It was quite an experience sitting in a packed auditorium going ‘yeah. I know that. I’ve seen that.’ And the TAB stories were next level.
Then I spent the afternoon with my daughter, having fun.
No complaints at all. by @atkinsaudacity

So, we are in the month of the launch. It seems surreal. But as I look back on the events which shaped me, the street I described in What We Left Behind, the legacy of childhood abuse, I find myself thinking of the phrase ‘one good person.’
The book is not memoir, and much of the plot is fictionalised. But there are some truths. And this led me to reflect on my good people. Those who helped me through. My childhood friendships with Tracey and Anne. Sharon and Jenny and David in high school.
But the person I really want to thank is a teacher. Paul Taylor was my history teacher. He was warm, generous, and sharply wise. He liked me as a person. He told me I had ‘a lot to offer the world. Try to offer it and not shove it down their throats.’
A comment I thoroughly disobeyed but which stayed with me for over 40 years.
I haven’t seen him since high school. I don’t even know whether he’s alive. But I want to thank him for what he did. He saw me.
I think of him often. He never knew what impact he had.
So here’s to the teachers of this city. You never know when you will be someone’s good person. You may never know. But what you do matters.
Wherever you are, Paul, thank you. by @atkinsaudacity

Hanging in Katoomba. Breakfast at The Freudian Slip cafe, and now in a packed hall for my first session. Looking forward to this one! by @atkinsaudacity

Five women. All doctors. All writers. All immersed in the strange, beautiful, tragic demanding, onerous world of healthcare.
All thinking hard about the world and their place within it. Three thrillers, one hilarious anecdata, one profoundly curious and analytic.
Being a woman in this world isn’t easy. Juggling two lives is harder. Finding time without guilt is impossible.
I think that allows in this instance for condensation of thought. Of urgency, brevity, of precision. I can’t speak for my own work but the others are more than deserving of being read. Interrogated. Applauded.
Do yourselves a favour and pick up some of these novels and cherish the audaciousness, the diversity of thought, the glimpses into the cogs grinding away beneath Australia’s surface.

Chilling Al fresco by @atkinsaudacity

I have always loved this time of year. The jacaranda blossoms whisper of optimism. Christmas and family time, the year’s wheel turned fully. The joys and despairs set to begin afresh.
Jacaranda blossoms remind me of driving with the kids to Byron Bay, salt and sand and a week or two watching the ocean.
The reminder that shit happens, but love does, too. That there are small pleasures as well as great sorrows. A scattering of purple against the sky
This year, I have had a lot to be grateful for. More to come.
I will. Be grateful. by @atkinsaudacity
