Join us for the Interco(a)stal afternoon program at Maine Maritime Museum!

Registration for the full Interco(a)stal Walk has reached capacity, but afternoon registration is now open.

Join us at Maine Maritime Museum for an afternoon of history, art, performance, food, augmented reality, and community.

Drawing on the work of six Maine museums and historical societies, 14 researchers and community knowledge keepers, and 20 artists, Interco(a)stal brings overlooked Black and Wabanaki maritime histories into public view while exploring Bath’s connections to colonization, slavery and Atlantic commerce, migration, labor, industrialization, ecological change, resistance, and community.

We’ll begin with a shared lunch featuring foodways connected to the histories explored throughout the project, with opportunities to meet Interco(a)stal partners and community organizations.

The afternoon continues across the museum grounds with art installations, performances, poetry, music, historical interpretation, augmented reality experiences, and participatory activities—a collective reimagining of the Wyoming monument.

Come spend the afternoon with us as we recover stories, return them to place, and make room for a fuller understanding of Maine’s maritime past.

Sunday, October 18 | 1–4 PM

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Jason works to round up Wabanaki stories that cause people to contemplate their relationship with nature, while promoting the preservation of wild places everywhere.

Jason is engaging in a live action for Interco(a)stal in collaboration with a local drum group, Cipelahq Ehpicik, whose name translates to “the Thunder Women.” He will paddle a traditional birchbark canoe from a boat landing on the north end of Bath to the museum, incorporating paddling songs and synchronizing his landing with the drum activation. He is also developing an augmented reality component for the canoe by capturing a 360° rendering of it. His activation and installation connect to historical accounts of Indigenous peoples paddling canoes in the Bath area.

“Through [my work,] I strive to share my vision of Wabanaki homeland with all people, and inspire them to explore for themselves.”

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Liz Rhaney (she/they) is an installation and experiential artist. Their work includes education, filmmaking, writing, music, and DJing under the name BLK Plutoh.

Liz is creating an augmented reality installation of a bust of Mary Heuston, a historical figure who was transported from Savannah, GA, to Bath as an enslaved woman. Mary took her freedom in 1850 with the help of local Black business owners. Liz connected to this story due to their parallel journey coming from Savannah to Bath. The installation will include a soundscape with sounds of the ocean captured at Malaga Island, as well as a spoken element.

“I am speaking to my respected elder, across times and spaces. I hope this piece encourages you to explore what stories from your own communities need to be made visible again.”

Through augmented reality, Black and Wabanaki stories are brought back into view.

Cape Town based artist Meghna Singh has brought her knowledge of augmented reality technology to the Interco(a)stal project, supporting our artist cohort with tools to create immersive historical recovery work. Using AR, we are able to design installations that can exist in a co-created world, expanding on our ideas of public art and monument making.

On Sunday October 18th, join us in Bath, Maine - The city of ships, for a day long journey through place, memory, stories, and augmented reality.

RSVP in our bio.

Over the past few months, i have had the great privilege of collaborating with some incredible artists, researchers, cultural bearers and community members in Bath, Maine as part of Interco(a)stal:Reading between the Ribs of Maines Maritime history.
In July, I lead an augmented reality workshop in Bath and what has unfolded since then has been deeply meaningful. Through three months of conversations, experimentation and co creation, we have developed a series of AR activations that highlight overlooked Wabanaki and Black histories left outside dominant maritime narratives. I feel grateful to these amazing, thoughtful and generous people.
The work will culminate in the WHERE walk in Bath on the 18 October 2026. If you are in Maine or nearby, do join us-register on the Atlantic Black Box website! And none of these connections would have been possible without the most supportive @indigoartsalliance, a very special thanks to @michael_carter_dop for working with me on this project to make it all happen

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Corinna Dibble’s artistic practice spans painting, mixed media, carvings, and textiles. She explores themes of identity and our relationship with the natural world, uncovering hidden histories that shape our understanding of place and community.

Corinna is painting portraits based on research into the people enslaved by the Vaughan family of Hallowell, Maine. Her intention is to uplift and represent those who have been forgotten and to bring attention to Maine’s connection to the transatlantic slave trade.
She is constructing a sculptural mirror from driftwood, objects gathered from coastal Maine, and her carvings. Her work reimagines the traditional framing of history, inviting viewers to reflect on lost histories that shaped the present and connections that carry across time.

“My art is a way of following the unknown—finding threads of connection and giving shape to what I discover.”

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Working across sculpture, immersive installation, sound, video, textiles, performance, and social practice, Athena Lynch explores memory, archival absence, Black diasporic histories, and the rituals through which communities reclaim place, identity, and belonging.

Athena is building individual sculptures representing the crew of the Wyoming ship. She is influenced by nautical materials and natural ocean elements such as buoys, knots, shells, and ship ribs. The sculptures will be activated by individual audio installations, as well as a primary audio that activates the entire space where they are installed. She is also drawing in elements of the water deity Mami Wata, incorporating voices of women offering prayer for the men lost on the Wyoming.

“I share Titus Kaphar's sentiment of ‘shifting focus,’ aiming to redirect attention to alternative narratives and the realities of inequitable existences.”

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Marissa Joly’s artwork is deeply informed by her Wabanaki heritage, exploring the connection between landscape, inner feeling, and cultural
memory, offering expressive interpretations of nature.

Marissa is presenting a multi-faceted concept centered on themes of nature, historical displacement, and the contrast between human industrial dominance and the enduring presence of land and water. She will be exploring these concepts with a mural and three augmented reality activations. Her works embody past, present, and future while revisiting the essence of the natural landscape.

“My goal is to leave a beautiful visually appealing mark in public spaces while spreading acknowledgement of the Wabanaki people who have occupied this land for thousands of years.”

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Stephen Oliver is a multimedia artist and director of design at Affinity Arts who believes in the universal power of creativity to help solve problems in diverse aspects of life.

Stephen is creating a piece that serves as a tribute to a historical figure named Gambo, a man of African descent who secured his freedom and famously played the fiddle, eventually lending his name to the local area. The artwork is designed not just as a static object, but as a focal point intended to cultivate a "free and open space" for community gathering, storytelling, and musical performance.

“I chose an obelisk shape because it bridges several symbolic forms: a grave monument, a musical metronome, and a traditional lighthouse sounding tower.”

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Ashley Page @ashleypage.studio (she/hers) is an interdisciplinary artist whose studio practice and curatorial projects serve as vehicles for storytelling, representation, and intergenerational exchange.

For Interco(a)stal, Ashley is creating a piece to merge the diaspora of African sounds, presence, and identity. She intends to explore how this diaspora has adapted across various contexts and geographical places. The primary goal of the installation is to create a "soft soundscape" that encapsulates the auditory experience of the diaspora. The soundscape is constructed from audio collected at various sites throughout the United States and internationally, including environmental elements such as the ocean, trees, wind, birds, and human language.

“What does Black tragedy sound like? How do we grieve and how do we find spaces of respite?“

Meet the Artists working on Interco(a)stal

Nyugen E. Smith @bundlehouse is a Caribbean-American artist whose work explores ritual, memory, migration, and the ways people create refuge and meaning amid crisis.

For Stranger Faces, Nyugen is utilizing a land-based experimental drawing process he developed during his residency at the Lusaka Contemporary Art Center. He is collaborating with the land in Maine to bring forth faces of those who have been erased, forgotten, disappeared, intentionally remained anonymous, and perhaps are not yet born, but will carry the torch for good in future.

“It is a collaboration with the landscape, history, time, and me as the vessel.“
