OUT NOW: Reflexive Tema and Global Elsewheres ... / Tema und seine globalen Widerspiegelungen

The fourth volume in the series Entangled Internationalisms / Verflochtene Internationalismen.

Edited by Edited by Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Doreen Mende and HEAD – Genève (HES-SO)

This Research Edition supports the ongoing curatorial study Reflexive Tema and Global Elsewheres ... initiated in 2021 by Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh and Ato Annan. Its point of departure is the Tema Printing Press in Ghana’s First Republic (1960–1966) in relation to practices of architecture, art, and archives in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The Edition, which forms part of the project “Entangled Internationalism,” pieces together fragments of the incomplete story of the Tema Press and its relevance to Kwame Nkrumah’s republican vision for an industrialized Ghana, using a montage of archival and declassified materials—including reports, memos, letters, maps, newspaper clippings, and photos. The second part of the book features Annan’s artistic exploration of Ghana’s presence in the Münzkabinett coin collection at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections).

Contributions by Annan Ato, Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh and Doreen Mende

Designed by Malin Gewinner and Lyosha Kritsouk

What does a site remember? Today, we went to Tema, 45min car ride East of Accra at the harbor. In 1964, the Government Printing Press @kwamenkrumahofficial was built by the architects’ collective Polygraph from Leipzig as part of an agreement between Ghana and GDR. Artist @atoannan.x and curator #KwasiOheneAyeh @iubizzle conducted interviews and archival research to trace what has become invisible: No material infrastructure seems visibly left from the Printing Press, yet, the question remains: what does a site remember? “Seeing is Beliving” Today, that harbor area in Tema is an industrial area trading cargo with goods, materials, and labor. “Reflexive Tema” with texts by Ato Annan, Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh a.o. And images by #KonradHelbig taken in 1958/59 at the very site, archived at #DeutschePhotothek @slub_dresden Publication of Entangled Internationalism series that I edited @spectorbooks @skd.museum Wonderful day trip with @atoannan.x @nunadoe @xtovw (first photo) @daniduemille @fca_ghana taken in Tema, Ghana by @atoannan.x
