Peace Peace Peace Family!

Join us January 22 at Gotham Bowery for the opening of The Village People, a show curated by Alyssa Alexander @aa_lee_sah featuring Payton: In the City, our collaboration print with @loudmom.studios.

The works within The Village People collectively ask: who and what makes a city a city? Themes such as policymaking, development, gentrification, and community and mutual aid, are explored in each piece.

Philip A. Payton’s Afro-American Realty Company brought over 50,000 Black residents to Harlem, laying the foundation for what would become the cultural capital of Black America. He stood as a pioneer for Black ownership — defiantly displaying his initial “PAP” on every building he owned.

This work reimagines Payton not as a historical figure frozen in time, but as a contemporary presence—walking through the Harlem he made possible, past and present collapsed into a single frame.

Community Spotlight: @atomicpeace.xyz

We must all act to solve the gentrification crisis in Harlem before it’s too late. It’s not just about the people that are forced to leave but the loss of our culture as well. We are always excited to partner with and support others who are approaching the cause from other angles. We can take action by demanding change, supporting local businesses and local creatives. One of our new partners is @atomicpeace.xyz a creative studio who recently launched a Kickstarter to fund their storytelling series, “The Last N***a With Waves” that explores how Harlem is changing and how we can fight to restore the magic.

“Community” has become every brand’s favorite buzzword but they seem to fall short of doing what it takes to actually create one.

The latest entry in the Economy of Modern Economy series explores community as a fundamental human need, what it takes to build it and how we move away from the current model of transactional “community building” by @atomicpeace.xyz

Museboard #002: Black people, yellow Gold ✨
Gold is a rare metal that has been a status symbol for hundreds, no, thousands of years. It signals wealth, achievement and style. It is a radiant declaration of style, tracing its roots from the regal adornments of the pharaohs to the modern mavens of opulence. Its luster can also elevate the everyday, lending an air of perceived sophistication to objects and attire.

Yet, the essence of gold transcends conventional symbols of luxury, especially for Black folks. There’s a unique harmony between gold and melanin rich skin, both a vibrant contrast and complement, that accentuates its glow. It’s the ingenuity and creativity of our culture, a readiness to embrace gold not just as an accessory but as an integral element of personal expression, transforming it from a mere emblem of status to a signature of style.

When we first imagined our series Shinin’ Guyana Gold, we made a few moodboards, exploring all the ways that jewelry and specifically gold jewelry was shot, styled and photographed. There was no shortage of photos, styled and captured in real life to pull from. We even added photos from our photographer partner @TravisMatthews, before knowing he was behind the lens. This magnetic pull towards gold, woven into the fabric of our culture, reflects a collective yearning to radiate brilliance, inside and out.

Museboard #001: Concert posters
The first job of the concert poster is to communicate key information about a performance: artist, venue, date and time but if we all only stuck to our 9-5s, the world would be so much more drab. The additional hustle for the concert poster is to be visually seductive to draw people in without overpowering the details. It is both advertisement and art.

Thus the concert poster becomes a window into the taste and technology that rule the day: from the musicians that appear, to the contemporary design trends and the technological formats through which they are created and consumed.

Concert posters have been around since the late 1800s with the advent of lithography, often featuring text heavy designs with showy, ornate borders. The marriage of image and text became more striking as technology advanced and the concert moved into grand spaces.

The golden age of concert poster design is absolutely, most definitely, the mid 1900s as posters subsumed the personality of the ever diverse genres of popular music. Psychedelic, trippy rock in the 60s led to abstract patterns, text that transformed to image and a groovy dizziness. The freeform, experimental jazz of the 60s and 70s more prominently featured the artist and their instrument and a distinctive personal cue.

Besides wildposting, concert posters today are experienced almost exclusively online via social media. Moving from the physical to the phone has its own trickle down effects – while the confines of the tangible medium have mostly been removed, the poster is more advertisement than art because you have less than a few seconds to grab someone’s attention before they swipe away.

As the price of concerts continues to skyrocket and merch settles into a stale space, we’re hoping that concert posters have a vinyl like renaissance where music and design lovers alike proudly display the art in their homes.
