I've dreamed of making a show @almeida_theatre since I first moved to London and what a scorcher of a play to be making in that amazing space.

Come and catch Look Back in Anger until 23 November. It's difficult and challenging and sometimes really nasty and I learned so much making it. I hope it does what the best theatre should do, asking really tough questions about who we are and how we live, and why do we love people, even when they hurt us.

I'm so proud of it and the whole team and this amazing company of actors.

And mightily proud of @diyanzora and Roots, which is running in rep - come and catch them both on the same day, you're in for a treat if you do.

🍎🫠🫠🫠 it’s a very surreal honour to be featured in @nytimes, chatting about Look Back in Anger and everything that’s taken me up to this point.

I’m a bit gutted not to be called the “bad boy of British theatre” but I guess “a nice young man” will please my mum at least. 🫡

Grateful for friends, mentors and family that have carried me along the way. And to @roslyn.sulcas for the beautiful words and @sambush_ for the photos where I think he really captured my brief that I wanted to look like a “cool architect”.

"Time is the longest distance between two places..."

Over 3 years in the making, two years delayed by pandemic. I'm overwhelmed, thrilled and a bit emotional to be finally sharing "The Glass Menagerie" @rxtheatre with the world on our press night tonight.

Our four actors and the whole team have worked so hard to bring you Tennessee Williams' incredible play to the stage.

This theatre is the place that made me - it's amazing to be back with a show I'm so so proud of. It means so much to me. 🦄

On Sunday 20 September, alumni, staff, artists and friends of the Gate gathered at @royalcourttheatre one last time to toast its legacy.

Curated and compèred by Artistic Lead Atri Banerjee, it was an afternoon of poetry and performances, speeches and song, featuring extracts from across the Gate’s history: from The Flu Season to Bootycandy, Phaedra’s Love to Hedda, Grounded to Omeros; from Down and Out in Paris and London, adapted by founding Artistic Director Lou Stein, right to the present day, with Wish You Were Here and Scenes from the Climate Era.

Thank you to all our speakers and performers: Miles Barrow, Roly Botha, Alan Cox, Giles Croft, Stephen Daldry, Afsaneh Dehrouyeh, Lucy Ellinson, Ziggy Heath, Paterson Joseph, Prince Kundai, Anoushka Lucas, Juliette Motamed, Isabella Nefar, Hannah Ringham, Sirine Saba, Lou Stein and Erica Whyman.

And thank you to the Royal Court Theatre for hosting us so generously for one last celebration.

The Gate may be closing, but its spirit will live on. Thank you to everyone who has made our work possible over the years. 💚

It’s the last day of A Midsummer Night’s Dream @regentsparkoat . On Tuesday the company very kindly indulged me as I took my camera backstage during the show - here’s a little photo diary from that evening.

In a tough industry (and world), I try not to take it for granted that I get to do what I love for a living. It does really take a village to make a show like this and it has been the biggest honour to work with this group of people, both on-stage and off, who are kind and talented and clever and funny. I’ve learned an enormous amount from them.

And thank you to the kids in the audience, the cosplayers, the schoolteachers in the DMs, the 20-somethings on dates, the couple who requested whether one of @maimunamemon ‘s gorgeous songs could be played at their wedding. Seeing a packed out theatre every night has been such a thrill, and we hope we gave you a version of this play that challenges the idea that Shakespeare has to be rarefied, can’t be for everyone. A show that celebrates theatre & love & art & community. We’re all very proud of it and thank you for sharing it with us.

Now, in Bottom’s words, that was lofty. I will miss this company terribly. Lovers to bed - ‘tis almost fairy time.

In honour of another scorching day in Athens, as the company take to stage for a matinee, here are some more shots from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Including a few from the Mechanicals' play, Pyramus & Thisbe (a little boy sitting next to me the other day during P&T stood up and said "This is UNBELIEVABLE. I've never seen ANYTHING like this before". You and me both, babes.)

This group of people are the absolute dream. Just ONE MORE WEEK left to catch them! We're basically sold out for the rest of the run (heh heh heh) but returns available and you can get £10 tickets to sit on the grassy banks at the side of the stage, released at 5pm every day.

Every now and then a project comes along that totally steals your heart away.

In love with this company and this show - I've never laughed so much in a rehearsal room. Won't want it to end! We're in previews and having a blast (heatwave notwithstanding…) - come and dream with us until 18 July.

🌍 Nicola Clements for the Gate Theatre, 2026 🌎

O captain my captain! It was a pleasure to dust off my camera to snap this shot of Nic as she leaves the Gate for adventures new.

There will be plenty of time to give Nic her flowers, but for now just to say it’s been a privilege to work these last three years alongside such a fearless, tenacious and intrepid leader, who believes so whole-heartedly in her work and its possibility to change the world. And also knits really good scarves. Any organisation is very lucky to have her.
