11th October - A day in honour of our Native Ancestors in opposition to the celebration of "Columbus Day" 🚫

Did you know that approximately 50% of the Indigenous people of Colombia live in la Guajira which easily has the nations largest indigenous tribe called the
Wayuú people? 🗿

They were one of the few tribes that successfully managed to avoid being subjugated by the Spanish. Their language, Wayuunaiki is related to the Arawak family of language predominant in the Caribbean.

Our brothers and sisters are still fighting for their human rights & for peace. International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples - Día Internacional de los Pueblos Indígenas 🗿

Before the invasion of the Americas and the Caribbean, indigenous communities were used to develop complex social, political, cultural, and religious structures where great civilizations flourished. With the arrival of the European conquerors and colonizers, these indigenous groups had to face colonization and genocides, being not all of them able to survive. Later, with the emergence of the nation-state, institutional policies marginalised and made the indigenous populations become invisible, plunging them into poverty and exclusion.

Currently, in a context of neoliberal and neocolonial capitalism, indigenous and native communities have to fight so that their communal lands and natural reserves that have historically been home, are not expropriated by national and transnational capital.

Today, which is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we recognise the resistance and historical organisation that indigenous and native groups have led to confront neo-colonial policies, to stop the forced displacement from their territories to the cities, opting for sovereign territorial movements where their language, traditions, culture, and territories are respected beyond the modern nation-state.

We also want to make a public call for the stereotypes and racist practices towards our indigenous and native communities to be eliminated. We must listen to their projects of how their presence and wisdom contribute to imagining futures where Good Living (concept of living fully and fairly in harmony and be careful with Nature and all living beings), can be part of the systemic change that we are witnessing.
