At the start of 2025 I was finishing my time in the best country on earth. And while I can effortlessly list off reasons as to why Australia is so remarkable, the real reason it will always hold such a big, unadulterated chunk of my heart is not rooted in the place itself, but in what it gave me. If I knew upon arriving that I would leave with a new sense of independence and a deeper understanding of myself, I probably wouldn’t have been as scared. Moving across the world can seem like the adventure of a lifetime, and it was, but what no one tells you is the hardest part — having to tear your life apart where you are now so you can build another one somewhere else. Quitting my amazing job, letting go of my apartment of 3.5 years, selling my things. Leaving everything behind to take a dicey chance on the new. But I never wavered, and I’m so glad I didn’t.

When my time was up there in March, I headed solo to LA to see if that was the place for me to settle. It was not lol. But I enjoyed all the in-n-out and erewhon while I had the chance.

Knowing this would be the last time I could truly travel before settling down, I took a month long trip to Samara, Costa Rica to hone my Spanish. Next thing I know, a good friend I met in Australia joined, and a friend of hers joined too. There I stayed with a costa rican family and attended 5 Spanish classes a week until mid April.

Finally, after a lot of praying, I came to accept that New York was where I was meant to be, and I moved back at the start of July. And while the previous year was undoubtedly the best year of my life, I was excited to finally have a place I could call home — indefinitely.

I like to think I left some part of me there in Oz. Whether it be in the dried up drink rings in my favorite bars or a small strand of hair embedded in the couch at a friend’s place. Whatever it may be, I hope I made an impression in some way. And while I’m sure that my story doesn’t end there, and maybe I’ll move back one day, I’m happy to be where I am right now.

So here’s to 2026! Here’s to being exactly where you’re meant to be. by @attncarly
