My intention during this research is to develop a self-glazing clay body for single firing to reduce the energy consumption of my practice. In these pieces, I also combine different coloured clay which allows me to give form and develop texture at the same time. I’m especially interested in creating a sense of depth and also transparency, making the process evident. I also like to show the material in its plastic state, as if it was frozen in time.

Looking back at a fantastic workshop with our guest mentor Attua Aparicio during Zurich Design Weeks.

Exploring GLASS ON CERAMICS led to such playful, unexpected and pleasing results. So much fun experimenting with materials, breaking the rules and discovering all the things that happen along the way.

A big thank you to @porzellanfabriklangenthal for sponsoring the porcelain ware and making this workshop possible.

Twisted Benches Summer School

A two week summer school for local state school students aged 14-18 run by Attua Aparicio and Oscar Lessing. Students designed and prototyped a series of outdoor furniture including a bench, seating and coffee table. Students learnt about furniture design, recycled aluminium sand casting techniques, metal bending, joinery and working with glass.

This initiative is part of a wider commitment to involve young people in shaping the future of their neighbourhoods. It provides a platform for students to learn by doing, while developing confidence, collaboration skills and portfolios that support future university and job applications in architecture, engineering, and design.

Attua Aparicio
Artist & designer · London, UK

Attua Aparicio is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of design, craft and art. Driven by material experimentation, her practice explores sustainability, tactility and material hybridisation, particularly through her ongoing research combining ceramics with waste borosilicate glass — a material that is normally difficult to recycle.

Presented as part of Dislocated Utility: Objects out of Place.
Curated by Natascha Madeiski & Paulina Reséndiz

Opening 17 September, 18:00

Create your own one of a kind porcelain plate!

Join us for a special workshop with designer Attua Aparicio and explore the vibrant possibilities of decorating ceramics with glass.

Using premium porcelain plates generously provided by Suisse Langenthal, you’ll create and decorate your own unique plate. As the glass melts and fuses during firing, it transforms into rich colours, textures and unexpected surface effects making every piece completely one of a kind.

Whether you’re a ceramicist, designer or simply curious to experiment with materials, this is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the leading voices working at the intersection of glass and ceramics.

Materials, process and unexpected combinations.

For this year’s Zurich Design Weeks programme, we’re delighted to welcome Attua Aparicio as a guest mentor at DB Pottery.

Working across product design and contemporary craft, Attua’s practice explores the expressive potential of materials, often bringing glass and ceramics together in playful and surprising ways. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Design Museum London, and she regularly teaches at the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins.

During ZDW, Attua will lead two workshops:

GLASS ON CERAMICS is a drop-in workshop, so you’re welcome to join at any point throughout the afternoon and experiment with glass on ceramic surfaces.

MIRROR, MIRROR is a one-day workshop where participants will create their own ceramic mirror.

We’ll be sharing a closer look at both workshops over the coming days. If you’d like to reserve a spot already, bookings are now open via the link in our bio.

Last weekend to see 100
Candleholders @jbblunkestate
I thought I share some photos of the candleholders I made for the show before it closes.

100 Candleholders is the second iteration of the ‘100’ series, inspired by JB Blunk’s 1981 exhibition 100 Plates, which playfully pushed the visual and functional boundaries of one of his most prolific forms. This group exhibition features 100 artists from around the world, each responding to the same brief: to create a candleholder of any material inspired by JB Blunk’s work or the Blunk House.

"Commissioned to design a candelabra as a centerpiece for a table, Bethan plays with graphic shapes, inspired by classic 1950s fabrics, and explodes them into 3D forms. An interest in the connection between candles and worship is also explored through the referencing of forms from miniature temples created as portable altars, with the crisscrossed wooden bows evoking Japanese interlocking construction, which is often found in temple architecture."

"This work is a solid piece of clay formed by Bosco by hand. He then fired it in the fireplace of his home in upstate, New York. The work reflects the philosophy of Bosco; how the accident, the unpredictable, and the non-control make the work unrepeatable."

"Storm in a teacup" is an idiom that describes a situation where a small problem or event is blown out of proportion, causing unnecessary drama and excitement. It implies that the fuss being made is not serious or important in the grand scheme of things. In other words, it's much ado about nothing. The wonky candle adds a bit of drama, tension and trepidation."

After 12 years, I’ve had to say goodbye to my studio at @acme.art. When I first moved in, I shared the space with Jochen; later, my sister Saelia and I took another studio in the same building, and over time, as spaces became available, we each ended up with our own.
The building is now being demolished as part of a redevelopment plan in Stratford, so everyone have had to leave. Luckily, we’ve found a very nice new studio not too far away in Forest Gate, which I’ll be sharing again with Jochen…I’m already missing not having Saelia around
A few images of a space that has given us so much 🤍
	1.	Jochen’s studio.
	2.	My studio.
	3.	@jochen.holz and his fantastic glass work.
	4.	Offering his strength and flexibility to load my large pieces into the kiln.
	5.	Already missing having my sister @saelia.aparicio as a neighbour.
	6.	I will also miss the sunsets over the Jubilee line
	7.	and the winter sun filling the room (the new studio is north-facing).
	8.	I’m sure the plants will miss it too,
	9.	but hopefully they’ll keep giving us displays like this…
	10.	…or this.
	11.	Wish me a Happy New Studio! by @attua.aparicio
