Oh, hey.

I’m Aubrey Derryberry—

Nashville-based performance artist & intuitive healer.

“What is performance art?”

A blend of experimental theatre, dance, and art.

My work is interactive, improvisational, and blurs the line between “performer” and “audience.”

“Where do you do it?”

Galleries, bars, schools, senior centers, festivals, living rooms, garages, clinics, parties, anywhere.

“What is your background?”

I’ve been performing & leading groups for over 20 years.

I’m a survivor of childhood trauma.

As an intuitive healer, I help others by sharing what has worked best for me on my own healing journey.

Art, music, puppetry, writing, dance, books, and mindfulness have long been my medicine.

I received my M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Tennessee and my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University.

“Are you licensed?”

No. I’ve cultivated a modality that I’ve found to be most effective. It’s a blend of clinical counseling that also integrates a holistic approach—the best of both worlds.

“Where do I learn more?”

Message me, join my email list, and / or click the link in my bio to read my interview.

I’m currently booking shows locally & throughout the U.S.

I’m also accepting new clients for in-person and virtual healing sessions.

Reach out to set up a free 15-minute chat and see if we jive.

Dad,

Thank you for teaching me to drive, ski, ride horses, and order,

for all the rides on rollercoasters,

our goofy inside jokes,

to live life on my own terms,

to examine with a critical eye the fine print,

to be an outlaw without breaking the law,

to choose independently,

to shoot straight,

to check my oil and pressure,

to appreciate dives,

to not ride the brakes,

for helping me get married and divorced,

to keep my eye where I want to go (not on what I fear),

to watch my six,

to add Goobers to popcorn,

to love movies, books, writing, and traveling.

You’re the coolest.

I love you always, dad.

When I think of the word “spiky,” what comes to me are sharp edges, studs, prickly bits.

These are typically things that evoke fear and avoidance when summoned. The concept of Sergio and Anais’ jewelry flips the typical meaning upside down and transforms it into something inclusive. It takes what is normally cast out and integrates it into the body, to be worn boldly instead of hidden.

In response, I felt compelled to further explore this as an artist. What about my spiky bits – my anxieties, self-consciousness, shame–the things I don’t want to show in fear I will be rejected and cast out? How can I allow those aspects to come through and take center stage? Do I give my shadows a chance to speak? Can I allow my raw, gritty, messy aspects to come forth and be seen?

As a trauma survivor, I have long struggled with shame, particularly when it comes to intimacy and sexuality. Working through and revealing these aspects of myself, my skin, and my body has been really difficult. Being photographed has also been a trigger due to past traumas in that area. It has distorted my self-concept.

By creating self-portraits, I worked through these aspects and reenvisioned myself through my own eyes. At the risk of rejection, I am allowing myself to be seen as I truly am. I am embracing the messy, untamed, naked parts of me.

I am giving myself permission to be spiky.

I’ve a tendency towards self-destruction that presents itself in less than obvious ways.

I’ve found if I get curious, instead of judging myself, I am more likely to catch it before it completely takes over.

Otherwise, and still sometimes even when I do become aware, I’m too taken by the momentum of it to stop.

I need it to run its course,

and crack me open,

splintered and dry heaving,

till the compulsion has reached

its end.

This is how my marriage began.
