Featured in Harpers Bazaar:

The ultimate guide to collecting and investing in art - From emerging artists to NFTs, we asked the experts...

Knowing where to start with investing in art is much like staring at a blank canvas. Where to begin? What colours, compositions, subjects? The world of creative investments is, after all, an incredibly subjective one; a market propelled by value judgements. Here, you will be capitalising on matters of the heart as much as of art.

“You have to always know your why,” says Natasha Arselan, who as well as being a collector of art is also the founder of the Natasha Arselan Gallery and of AucArt, an online art platform that specialises in emerging artists. “How you approach your journey of collecting and investing – what you collect, how much you spend. It all depends on your reasoning.”

‘Yarty Landscape’ by Philip Maltman. Maltmans’ work relies largely on constantly generated subject matter from a wide cultural background that produces a number of discreet series where text, images, Art History and the natural world mix to create challenges for a contemporary response that will be unsentimental, and non-decorative but electrifying, painterly and invoking an inquisitive, if not passionate, recognition in the viewer. What you don’t see is often what you get. ‘I had a great teacher in the 1960’s up on the West Coast of Scotland as well as the Ayrshire coast itself. We listened to Thelonious Monk and Dave Brubeck and painted from Kandinsky, Klee and Pollock in the art rooms at secondary school. I was hooked. Now I revere James Joyce, Robert Motherwell, Cy Twombly and Don Van Vliet, all great painters in their own discreet ways.’ by @auc.art

‘Beyond retro’ by Gemma Kauffman (b. 1979, UK) a painter working from a remote studio immersed in the elemental landscape of Alentejo, Portugal. Moving between figuration and abstraction, she explores colour as a living language, balancing harmony and contrast through layered, intuitive compositions. Influenced by cinema, music, textiles, and a synesthetic sensitivity to colour, her paintings examine the interplay between memory and observation. Beginning with plants, light and atmospheric landscapes, her spontaneous gestures draw on rhythm, pattern, and repetition to create immersive visual spaces that invite emotional and sensory connection. Her work is held in private collections across Europe. by @auc.art

‘Subsurface glimmer’ by Aliaksandr Biruk (b. 1992, Minsk) is a painter currently living and working in Warsaw. He received his initial training in easel painting before completing higher education in monumental painting. This dual background continues to inform his practice, in which painting is approached not simply as an image, but as the construction of a perceptual and psychological environment. Biruk’s practice explores states of experience that exist before meaning solidifies into stable narratives and those in which established narratives begin to dissolve. He is interested in the fragile threshold between presence and interpretation — moments in which experience remains immediate, embodied, and not yet fully articulated. Experiences of displacement and movement between different cultural contexts have deepened this interest by revealing the constructed nature of personal and collective narratives. by @auc.art
