Audio Foundation is thrilled to present an evening with Kina:suttsu (@kina_suttsu)

Based in Hiroshima, Japan, Kina:suttsu performs solo improvisations built from soprano saxophone, sampler, and electronics — moving fluidly between ambient soundscapes and experimental noise. Each performance is shaped in response to its environment, with a focus on immersive, site-sensitive work that treats the performance space itself as an active collaborator. The results are unpredictable, textural, and deeply attuned to the room they’re made in.

Foil: the track or scent of a hunted animal

In this three-part experimental radio series, Beth Robertson investigates the act of recording as a site of haunting.

Framed as a series of ghostly encounters, the stories explore recording as a practice of remembering, one that isn’t unique to humans. Characters track and trace sounds as both presence and absence, reimagining what it means to listen. A museum host becomes obsessed with the silence of her building after hours, and begins recording it in an attempt to reach whatever lies behind that silence — only to find herself listening, over and over, to the sound of recording, or perhaps to the silence of being listened to. In a derelict hospital prized for its biodiversity, two recordists sneak in to capture its wildlife, but when their equipment cuts out, a strange scratching sound lures one of them up to the higher floors. And in a gallery, after an invigilator glimpses a mysterious figure in the corner of the room, the staff come together to investigate what they assume is a ghost — until they discover that more than ghosts can haunt you.

Foil Tracks follows the traces of hauntings and huntings, residues, silences, and voiceless utterance — and the unease of being caught recording. Sound as a medium blurs the boundary between things: the recorder becomes the recorded, the storyteller becomes the listener. Listeners are invited to encounter the radio not as a listening apparatus, but as a site where hauntings and huntings take shape.

NEW INTREPID LIFE FORMS EMANCIPATE QUEER DESIRES

Come witness alien contusions and rogue life growths crafted from excursions into the inner wilderness.

Through sculpture, sewing and song, we heal our wounds through creative abstraction, happening upon hope among chaos. These beings and their songs animate our individual experiences of queer joy and resistance. It’s a messy but vibrant menagerie embodying conflicting feelings of hope and grief.

Enjoy bathing among the raucous joyous chorus of creatures who will not be silenced.

Please join us to mark the opening of The little guys that come out of me: sit and listen to them, a new exhibition by Natasha and Ezra Munro and Lucky Pollock.

Through a “tag team” collaborative process spanning 12months, siblings Natasha and Ezra Munro crafted a series of elaborate and sometimes explicit beings from donated and found objects, clay, fabric and printed materials. Lucky Pollock and Natasha Munro then sonically responded to the creatures, with Lucky’s sound works being crafted on a Nintendo DS.

With the exhibition, the artists consider whether “the playful yet confronting nature of these creatures and their songs enable a more realistic depiction of queer expression. The aim of these works was to spark joy (and possibly shock), to grieve but also to play. Some of these beings are almost toy-like, but perhaps too confronting to quite be so. The bitcrushed sound of the Nintendo combined with Lucky’s hyperactive and frenetic compositional style amplify this feeling.”

Queer joy means living freely, openly and honestly in alignment with one’s emotions and desires. Unfortunately in our current world this also means embodying that which some simply repress, refuse to understand, or outright scrutinise. The creature-like creations of Ezra and Natasha do not gloss over the pain that is caused by this oppression, nor are they completely overwhelmed by it, integrating these conflicting aspects to become a dynamic gathering of symbolically hopeful life forms.

Over her winter residency at Audio Foundation, Sina Leo (@space.vox) has developed a new work exploring accumulation and the passage of creative time. The multidisciplinary artist presents in the back gallery an exhibition of painting and installation titled Threads.

Through August and September, Sina invited three musicians, Ryan Tomov, Francesca Parussini and Tashi Stewart, to visit her individually and improvise in sequential solo recording sessions. Musicians were tasked with adding to what their predecessor had made of their time in session. With each round, the layers of sound deepened in tandem with the painting.

Between sessions, Sina turned to installation to further consider ideas of retention, extending the work’s meditation on accumulation beyond the paint and into sculptural complexity. The finished exhibition brings the painting, the installation, and the complete layered recordings together, presenting the full arc of the collaboration as one work.

vegetable.machine.animal (vma) / (@skirted_records) will tour Aotearoa New Zealand from 27 September to 28 November 2026 in support of TRIO, the project’s new album, co-released by Audio Foundation Records and skirted Records. The 15-date tour runs from Whanganui to Invercargill, taking in main centres and out-of-the-way venues alike.

TRIO is billed as the “interspecies trio” — a collection of music grown from the interaction of drums, modular synthesis, and plant-triggered biosignals. It stands as a companion to vma’s 2025 release, GUEST, which invited a rotating cast of collaborators — including Ruby Solly, David Long, and Mo H. Zareei — to add their voices to the project’s living sonic ecology. Where GUEST opened the circle outward, TRIO pulls the focus back to the project’s original three-way interaction between human, machine, and organism, completing the pair of bookends vma first envisioned for its 2024 Sonic Artist Residency. A cherry log, gifted to the project during its 2025 Aotearoa tour and now fruiting with mushrooms, generates the voltage that drives the synthesiser, translating fungal and plant activity directly into sound alongside live drumming and electronics. The result is a polyphonic, unpredictable soundworld exploring what a “more-than-human” music might sound like.

Live, vma continues to deliver dynamic and unpredictable performances, working in real time with the musical ecology of human and more-than-human interaction — drums, electronics, percussive clatter, and plant-triggered samples combining into a soundworld that is as perplexing as it is entertaining.

AF is thrilled to present a night with Colleen Coco Collins (Canada)

Colleen Coco Collins (@colleencococollins) [she/they] is an interdisciplinary artist of Irish, French, and Odawa descent, working in songwriting, performance, poetry and visual arts. Her practice oscillates temporality, presumptions of sentience, subversion, rhythm, gesture, frequencies, the ouroboric, the orogenous, the peripatetic, love and the polyglottic. She lives littorally in rural Port Greville, Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia, Canada amidst crows, coyotes, grackles, bees, humpback, lichen and fox.

Coco has been making things for many years. She has collaborated as a recording and performing artist with musician Will Kidman, and for bands including Status/Non-Status and Julie Doiron. She’s also played with Jon McKiel, Carson McHone, The Burning Hell, Penny and The Pits, Construction & Destruction, and others. Coco's diverse practise extends to libretti and conceptual visual art, and she has co-created with composer Katharine Petkovski, visual artists Sheilah and Dani ReStack, Claire Greenshaw, and Rita McKeogh; poet Luke Hathaway, musician Zoon, and others. Her work has been shown in galleries across Turtle Island (Can & US), the UK, Eire, and in Australia & NZ/Aotearoa. Her published books include the poetry collections Sorry About The Fire and Radicants (with visual artists Amanda Fauteux and Miranda Bellamy). Coco is currently finishing up her solo album, Vulpes, and recently worked as Writer-in-Residence at UNB Fredericton.

With support from Nranrā: Allana Goldsmith, Rosie Langabeer & Neil Feather

Exploring subtle and complex sounds, the disarming, charming, cardigan wearing westie trio improvises electro-biological music that feels both chaotic and inevitable. Goldsmith’s sounds move effortlessly between melodious phrasing and jagged rupture; Langabeer brings pan/non-tonal keyboard reckonings that flurry and hypnotise; Feather’s approach combines mechanical engineering and gelatinous soundscapes. Together, the capricious trio have an auahatanga entirely their own.
