🐾 Some narrators bring water into the booth. Nikki Zakocs brings her Pomeranian.

For Nikki, narration comes back to a lifelong love of reading and the way books can carry us into other places, other lives, and other points of view. Audiobooks add another layer to that experience, turning the words on the page into something intimate and immediate for the listener.

That sense of wonder is at the heart of how she approaches the work, and probably explains why her favorite booth companion has four legs.

Meet Nikki Zakocs in today’s In the Booth on AudiobookRush.

What does it mean to use your voice when someone else is trying to silence a story?

AudiobookRush founder Daniel Henning has narrated three books that have been banned or challenged, including The House in the Cerulean Sea, Surrender Your Sons, and Gender Queer. In our latest The Rush, he writes about why those stories matter to him personally, and how audiobooks can give young people private access to books they may otherwise feel afraid to pick up.

Press play. Stay curious. Be brave. 🎧📚

Stories can challenge us, stretch our empathy, and introduce us to lives beyond our own. What happens when those stories are silenced?

In “Being Brave in an Era of Book Banning,” Caitlyn Apgar explores the courage to keep listening, ask questions, and embrace unfamiliar perspectives.

📚 Some paths to the booth are anything but straightforward.

Ferdelle Capistrano started singing professionally at seven, became a recording artist and singer-songwriter, began acting onstage as a kid, studied Book and Media Studies, and eventually made her way to California, where a friend in a Meisner class introduced her to the world of audiobooks.

It feels fitting for someone whose life has always lived somewhere between performance and books.

🎧🎙️ Today’s In the Booth features narrator Dan Bittner, who came to audiobooks after auditioning for his very first title, getting the job, and realizing pretty quickly just how much there was to learn.

With the help of director Paul Ruben, Dan found his footing in narration, and from there, more auditions turned into more books, more confidence, and a career that now spans audiobooks, animation, games, and character work.

In the booth, Dan keeps it simple: a huge bottle of water, inner earphones, low light, and a picture of his kids.

And his approach to the work might be summed up best by what he tells every director and engineer: you may have worked with better narrators, but nobody’s going to be a more fun hang in the booth.

Spend a little time In the Booth with Dan Bittner at AudiobookRush.

🎬 Stephanie Einstein moved to Los Angeles after earning her acting degree with TV and film in mind. Then she discovered audiobooks and found another place to put all that training to work.

What started with a demo and a first audiobook contract grew into a career behind the mic, where Stephanie found the freedom of getting to build characters and tell an entire story with just her voice.

And one idea has stayed with her along the way: be generous. The universe has a way of returning what’s being offered.

Meet Stephanie Einstein In the Booth, featured In the Booth at AudiobookRush. ✨

📼 Before Gabriel Vaughan ever stepped into a recording booth, audiobooks were already a big part of his life.

Growing up in New England without a television, he spent a lot of time listening to books on tape. Years later, his wife and fellow narrator Piper Goodeve recommended him when an author needed a male co-narrator. He auditioned, booked the job, and officially joined the family business. Or, as they call it: #marrators.

After a childhood spent listening to stories, Gabriel now gets to be the person telling them, with a career spanning fiction, nonfiction, sci-fi, history, and more.

Julia especially praises Emily Pike Stewart's performance, from her distinctive character voices and vocal sound effects to the way she brings every personality vividly to life.

🎧 A chilling, immersive listen that might just keep you cleaning the house, walking the dog, and finding excuses to keep listening.

Ellie Gossage records audiobooks in the dark “like a teen stealing time on the family desktop at midnight,” and honestly, we kind of love that for her. 🎙️

A longtime classical theater actor who grew up listening to stories on a thrift-store cassette player, Ellie eventually found a career that brought together her love of language, performance, and books. And while audiobooks can help us read more, Ellie loves them for almost the opposite reason: they give us a chance to slow down, sit inside a story, and let a performance add another layer to the world an author created.

Go In the Booth with Ellie to hear more about her path from theater to narration and why she considers audiobooks one of the most delightful gateways to imagination.
