Today is United Nations Day, and you may not be aware that as well as all of the great peacekeeping and humanitarian work that is carried out by this organisation, they also produce a large number of podcasts that support and inform upon the vast spectrum of activities that they are involved in. The subjects of these include food, climate, nuclear, health and education. It was 20 years ago yesterday that Adam “The Podfather” Curry published the first episode of “The Daily Source Code”, which is widely recognised as being the first ever podcast in their current format. He had been working with coder Dave Winer for around 5 years to develop the combination of RSS code and audio content to allow listeners to download radio shows and listen on demand. 20 years on, there are around 5 million podcasts available, and around 500 million podcast listeners worldwide.

The second show I have to post about this week is the hot off the press, just released interview with Hannah MacDonald. I chat with Hannah about her show, which started out as a book club podcast in Covid, but has now become quite prominent in the literary industry with a wealth of authors and publishers requesting a spot as a guest on the show. Hannah shares a few secrets around her unexpected success, and we discuss how production values can be maintained and improved even on a low budget.

Last weeks episode of the Audio Editing Secrets podcast featured a lovely chat with Jo Butler and Melissa Gates who host the Buddhistchats podcast. Their show was born out of an idea to connect people during the Covid-19 lockdowns. We record this episode using Squadcast, and chat about the differences between recording online and in a studio, editing using Audacity, and I am asked some interesting questions about dropping into an existing recording.

The second episode of the Audio Editing Secrets podcast is out today, and in this episode I speak with actor, comedian and journalist @thedominicfrisby. Dominic hosts a podcast titled The Flying Frisby, where he reads out loud the articles that he writes for Money Week and other publications. He tells me about his equipment, his process, and we also have a chat about how AI is affecting his work, and there are some handy audio editing tips included in this episode too.

The Audio Editing Secrets podcast is now available, and in episode 1 I talk to podcast makers Michelle Thomas and Joseph Dance about their own podcast, the @greensvsblackspodcast. It’s a retrospective look at hit HBO show House of the Dragon, and I delve into their process of making their podcast, setting up a home studio and editing without any experience.
