We’d be remiss if we didn’t include Nick Holder’s groove laden classic, Underground Alternatives to the 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 series.

Originally released in 2000, on NRK Sound Division, Underground Alternatives is a House obsessive’s wet dream. Across its grooves, Deep House gets stretched into something stranger and more hypnotic.

Soulful enough for the dance floor but yet still, peculiar enough to warrant deep listening. Holder keeps things firmly rooted in House while constantly nudging at its edges.

Singer and poet Jemeni delivers a poignant, politically charged spoken word piece on the opening track; making way for a record that moves effortlessly between smoky vocal cuts, jazz-tinged grooves and deeper, more eccentric corners of Holder’s productions.

Through its 9 tracks, Holder maintains a tight balance between warmth and experimentation, never really straying to far from the groove, that you forget that this is first and foremost, music made to move bodies.

Marc Leclair has been a staple in our space(s) for nearly two decades, offering an assorted selection of dance music under his various monikers.

Regarded as one of the foremost architects of micro-house, under the Akufen pseudonym, the Montreal native ushered in a style of house marked by bouncy bass lines slathered onto the byte-sized samples. After the release of his critically acclaimed 2002 debut album, My Way, on Force Records, Leclair went on to put out a number of singles on labels like Revolver, Trapez, Perlon (🙇) and the legendary Fabric 17 mixtape.

Down the line he introduced us to his Horror Inc. alter ego, a side of him that was always present, even under the Akufen alias. Discerning listeners can hear rumblings Horror Inc., defined by the heavy use of strings, imbuing a rising tension that at-times gives way to quick-shuffled percussion breaks. In 2013, Briefly Eternal was released again on Perlon (🙇), arguably one of their most outstanding full-lengths to date. Leclair takes us on a winding path inspired by Buddhist philosophies, turning essentially a dance record into a meditation on impermanence, transformation and the nature of time.

We were recently invited to select an album for a special listening session at Noma hifi in Minneapolis and couldn’t think of a better fit for the 𝙗𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙝 of a nascent collaborative effort.

Marc’s 2003 opus, Musique Pour 3 Femmes Enceintes— which interestingly enough was the first album we posted on this platform, is undoubtedly one of our favourite listening experiences of all time. Originally released under MUTEK on CD, MP3FE received the @insheepsclothinghifi treatment with a limited release on wax and it sounds like butta baby! We broke the seal and ran an impromptu test spin @leave_me_alone_bar a few weeks ago and it was magic 😌
