Today we are spotlighting Audra Weaser

Los Angeles-based artist Audra Weaser creates abstract paintings inspired by the shifting light, movement, and atmosphere of nature. Drawing from memories of the Pacific Ocean and other waterscapes, Weaser builds her works through layers of pigment, plaster, and paint before literally sanding back into the surface, an excavation process that reveals hidden colors, movement, and depth.

You’re not looking at what she painted. You’re looking at what she left after sanding most of it away.

Audra Weaser builds this piece in layers, weeks of pigment and white veils stacked on top of each other, then picks up a sander and cuts straight back through it. The work only shows up once she starts removing paint, not adding it. What survives that process is the painting. She earned her MFA at Claremont Graduate University, has spent the past decade obsessed with water and light, and her work now sits in collections from New York to Hong Kong to Abu Dhabi.

Send this to whoever in your life appreciates what’s underneath more than what’s on top.
