Hot days like today in London were one of the inspirations for my thesis on alternative bio-based refrigeration methods.

Refrigeration technology is responsible for 8% of global emissions (that is 3X the aviation industry). Refrigerants used in older models trap heat in the atmosphere up to 2,400X more than CO2. So the way we make cold actually makes the Earth hotter.

Xero Cool proposes a system insulated with bacterial cellulose xerogel and wool (rather than plastic foams), cooled by solar thermal absorption technology, an electricity-free cooling system powered by the sun (rather than compression systems that consume an average of 10-15% of domestic energy bills).

Swipe to see a few of the refrigerators I’ve found binned on the street recently. by @audrey.c.levy

Xero Cool : How to Grow a Refrigerator

This refrigerator is built by bacteria and powered by the sun. It connects new findings in xerogels–a type of lightweight bio-derived insulation material–to emerging science in heat-driven refrigeration technology leveraging nontoxic refrigerants. The project imagines a future where we collaborate with more-than-human organisms to create performative materials and harness the abundance of solar energy to power ecologically benevolent technologies. Fundamentally, Xero Cool questions how communities might wield power through food sovereignty and localised material intelligence when critical infrastructure like cooling space is decoupled from global architects of capitalist distribution.

tracing the life of sandpaper
.
Sandpaper is used to perfect objects and spaces, then exorcised from those spaces through the cyclical labour of waste removal, surface disinfection, and repetitive maintenance. Once its grit is worn down, the only current solution for its next transition is trash disposal. Since it is a composite material, it cannot be recycled into new objects in standard municipal recycling streams, a system that is limited in its ability to reprocess even the simplest substances. The material becomes a discarded relic of refinement, the antithesis of most products it is used to create.

Shapes and textures from a sprint exploring responsive mycelium architectures with @haiyunwu128, @sleepydaisy330, and @reynaedson in our first year @mabiodesign. We imagined a soft wall system that reacts to environmental temperature and humidity by flexing its shape. Reversible shape memory could change the wall’s insulative quality by adjusting the volume of the air pocket trapped within.
