I get asked (frequently!) if the brands I voice campaigns for gift me the products in the ads. The short answer: I WISH!! PLEASE DO!!

In that alternate world where I would have been paid partly in product over the past 2 decades, I would be alternating between my multiple cars, drowning in top quality skin care, and enjoying watching my shares in our national carrier and a handful of banks trend upwards from the comfort of any number of prime condominiums. But in every timeline, I’m sure I’d occasionally crave the comfort of familiar fast food - so it’s a good thing I attract jobs like this!

Voicing advertisement campaigns for 20 years means I’ve worked with loads of really cool clients. The 14 year old Audrey standing in line at a fast food joint would have been coolly impressed that one day, Coca-Cola would be paying *her*.

I have gotten used to jumpscaring myself with my own voice out in the wild, for example, hearing my own voice telling me to press 1 for English when I try to get in touch with my travel insurers. THIS job, with its high energy and even higher ubiquity put my startle reflex into overdrive while it aired, and was a natural choice for my portfolio posts!

I’d apologise for being the voice of one of the hardest campaigns to outrun, but really, singing this jingle (including singing and stacking the harmonies, and tripling myself to thicken the audio experience out) was a LOT of fun! The clearest lesson I’ve learned in my 20 years as a voice actor is that having a “nice voice” has very little to do with the work, let alone longevity in the industry.

When I started out, I approached sessions as both a devising actor and an editor, asking for endless retakes because I knew I could do better. My sessions would drag, clients came away cranky, the engineers and producers remained politely formal and distant.

Switching on my intuition, listening deeply, and activating pattern recognition is how I now get a spidey sense on what the client Actually wants, even if they don’t always have the ready vocabulary to express it.

The 10,000 hours put in doesn’t hurt - it turns out, if you do something for 2 decades, you tend to get the results you want quite quickly, so everyone can joyfully sneak in a coffee break before their next appointment :) Pop into the DMs if you have questions! taken in Singapore / Singapura / 新加坡 / சிங்கப்பூர் by @audreyisaudrey

Voice work tends to be quite a lonely existence, standing solo in a small, soundproof booth for as long as it takes. Upon reflection on the 20 years spent listening to myself breathing loudly in various booths in various studios, waiting for the talkback to go back on, it’s made me quite comfortable in my own company.

It’s normal for my voice to be the only one on whatever finally goes to air. I find it especially novel (and fun!) when my small part in a project gets combined with other kindred spirits who lend their voices in the same way, even more when we are combined into a choir!

The portfolio posts continue, as I excavate fond memories to celebrate my 20th year as a voice actor. Here, another beautifully shot piece from another frequent flyer, Vaseline.

One of the frequent challenges of the job is discerning the “correct” pronunciation of words in the script, made more involved when two separate briefing documents contain differing opinions on how a vowel should be intoned.
