I spent hours, days, weeks, months inside this manuscript.And then I sent it out into the world and felt something I wasn’t prepared for—the very real possibility that someone important might not find it as important as I do.That’s the part nobody talks about with querying. It’s not the rejection that’s hard. It’s the moment right before, when you realize you’ve handed the thing you made—the thing that cost you something real—to a stranger who will decide its worth in minutes.I sent my first query anyway. I wrote a novel. A real one, a literary historical fantasy about what survives when the powerful decide certain knowledge shouldn’t exist.This week I submitted Where the Birds Go Quiet to the Bath Novel Award—which is the most exposed I’ve let this work be. It’s also the most honest thing I’ve done in a long time.I look back and am so grateful to the little girl who only had imagination available to her. She was the real reason for all of this. Something is starting. I can feel it. by @audreylandrade
