they say everything is better in twos

.

Before Howard, I had never even heard of an HBCU. I grew up as a small-town Black girl in a predominantly white area where HBCUs were rarely talked about or encouraged. Then one night while rushing to finish college applications, my dad yelled, “You’re applying to an HBCU too, right? Like Howard or Spelman?” I remember asking, “What’s that?”

Funny how one moment can redirect your entire life.

Howard was not my dream school since I didn’t know it existed. Which I am a little bit embarrassed to admit lol. But I believe things enter your life exactly when they’re supposed to, and I ended up exactly where I needed to be.

What some people don’t know is that I was accepted into Howard twice.

The first time I could not attend was because of a debilitating heart condition that forced me to withdraw my acceptance and take a gap year. During that year, I experienced a lot of hardship, grief, and sorrow. Things happened that broke me and I lost parts of myself. I fell into a deep depression, spending many nights crying. Watching my peers move into dorms and start college “on time” while I stayed behind made me feel isolated, ashamed, and terrified that my life was already moving in the wrong direction at just 18 years old.

But I found the strength to do it all over again.

The essays. The applications. The recommendations. The waiting. Twice.

And Howard accepted me twice.

Four years later, I’m leaving with two degrees, fell in love with a beautiful city that expanded me, and a version of myself my younger self would be amazed by. Howard challenged me, inspired me, and gave me room to grow into who I am today.

So yeah, maybe everything really is better in twos:
two acceptances,
two degrees,
and two versions of me
the girl who arrived carrying pain, uncertainty and hope,
and the young woman leaving with resilience, purpose, and a bright future she worked hard for.

Thank you Dad and Nonnie for being my anchors. Mamãe for being my safe place. My siblings for being my reason to laugh and smile. My friends from Howard for becoming my chosen family.

And finally, thank you, Howard University. by @audrihaw
