I started this painting in 2021 and abandoned it because I wasn’t happy with the composition. I picked it up again last year thinking I would crop it and restretch it on a smaller canvas, but then decided I’d frame it with caution stripes and subway tiles. I liked that you could still see the previous layer underneath and so I kept it semi-opaque. Then I abandoned it again and picked it up again recently and finished it last month. I’m going to try and go back and finish other paintings I’ve abandoned, see you in 4 years 😜 You can check out this painting and more this weekend at Bushwick Open Studios!

A Shot of Impunity  2026 Plaster, joint compound, plastic, masking tape, vinyl paint, acrylic gouache, sand (imitation South Padre Island sand) 10 ⅝  X 4 ⅛  X 3 ¼  inches A Shot of Impunity is for Ruben Ray Martinez, the first known U.S. citizen killed by ICE during Trump’s second term. He was shot three times in South Padre Island in March 2025. It took nearly a year for it to be revealed that an ICE agent pulled the trigger. (Jack Stevens, a Supervisory Special Agent with Homeland Security Investigations, which is a division of ICE. ) The sculpture takes the form of a mouthwash bottle. One side carries a logo and the name Island Breeze. The other holds a still life of a red hat. Inside, there is imitation sand from South Padre Island. It is meant to be used, rinsed, and spat out, a ritual for those who would commit the unthinkable and walk away clean. taken in South Padre Island, Texas by @audweepaints

Two exhibitions. One shared commitment to bringing the work of women figurative painters into greater view. At the Bo Bartlett Center in Columbus, Georgia, Rising Voices 4 brings together finalists and the winner of The Bennett Prize®, showcasing the range and vitality of contemporary figurative realism by women artists from across the United States. Alongside it, The Cost of Life, a solo exhibition by Bennett Prize 3 winner Deng Shiqing, offers an intimate exploration of surrogacy, identity, motherhood and the value we place on human life. We hope you will experience both exhibitions, on view through Dec. 5, and spend time with the artists and ideas at the heart of each.
