Jack, meet world. World, meet Jack!

Jack Bryan Fash, born July 3rd and weighing in at 6 pounds and 9 whole ounces. 19 and three quarter inches and absolutely ready to rumble.

Born at 12:34 (“One, Two, Three, Four”) because he’s super sharp and already knows how to count.

Delivery was sudden and unexpected but smooth as all could be. People always call birth a miracle, and after the last few days with Jack, I can say with confidence that truer words have never been spoken.

We love him so much already and we are so grateful. by @augiefash

HEY BUD Paul Escolar Duncan Freehand -

Bryan Jardin recently asked me to tell the story of Paul's Hey Bud art and how it came to be. I got to typing, and kept typing. Skip to the last few paragraphs to read about Hey Bud in particular. Otherwise, strap in for a longer ride.

--------------------------------

My yoyo education was two fold.

I was raised in a relatively small, rather quiet town with a lot of farms. It is certainly not the kind of place where you might imagine yourself getting into something as creative and as weirdly niche as yoyo.

Especially in the pre internet/pre social media era. Back then, the backs of Duncan and Yomega yoyo packages still had instructions on how you could send them a check in the mail. And then 4-6 weeks later, they would send you back 5 “genuine” cotton yoyo strings.

Sometime in late 1997 or early 1998, I randomly found a Klutz yoyo trick book in a store, and I fell in love. Teaching myself loop the loop blew my mind. I’d stuff 10-12 yo-yos in my school uniform shorts and spend all recess practicing. Or unknotting a giant nest of yoyo strings.

I was starved for information and instruction. I scrounged for every bit of information about yoyo that I could get. I’d check every store for any sort of yoyo product or trick book or anything.

One day, my mom, brother and I were out for lunch in the town next to ours. My mom spotted a tall, cool, kind of alternative teenager wandering into a Blockbuster video rental place.

Mom exclaims, “He has a yoyo! We have to go in! You should say hi and introduce yourself! He seems good! Show him what you can do!”

I was still very much a kid, and was extremely shy and unconfident. I was embarrassed and didn’t want to go in. My mom dragged me in, against my pleading insistence that the guy she saw didn’t even look like he was good at yoyo. All he was doing was going up and down and doing a few forward passes.

Turns out that that guy was Spencer Berry.

Part Two of ?.

I’m writing some posts talking about the lead up to the release of mine and Jeff Pang's new yoyo, the Exos.

Originally, I was going to keep this short, but it’s turning into a much bigger story than I had bargained for. I went to go talk about a new yoyo but somehow started talking about life.

This part of story has nothing to do with the Exos. And honestly, I can’t promise that the next part of the story will either. Maybe not even the one after that.

But don’t worry. This multi part, self indulgent blog post series is just like a yoyo. We're going to wind it up eventually.

EXOS Part 2: Intersections

As many great stories do, this one involves a girl.

And yes, this story somehow also involves Jeff.

2016: Prague, Hong Kong, Big Sur

Jeff and I keep bumping into each other all over the world. First in Prague, home of my favorite yoyo crew and all-time favorite contest.

Next, Hong Kong.

But before we make it to Hong Kong, I need to introduce you to somebody.
To do that, let’s throw back a few years previously to 2016, to Chico, California. For the non yoyo initiated among us, Chico is prior home of the US National Yoyo Contest and is one of the epicenters of yoyo worldwide. They’ve even got a sweet multi hundred pound yoyo, created by a brilliant San Francisco dentist, that they’ve yoyoed from the top of a crane a few times. If you're into yoyo, you know. This hobby goes real, real deep.

At that time, I’m now a super senior at Chico State University.

I had been set to graduate the previous winter. Though, early in the semester, I’d suddenly received a strange, poorly translated email. It apparently came from this Chinese toy company named the “Guangdong Alpha Animation and Culture Co Limited.”

They invited me to participate in the something called the “Nationwide Yoyo Champion Itinerant Games” promotion, traveling all over China. It looked like spam. Was I about to send my money to a Nigerian prince? I don’t know.

But that’s a story for another time. The important part here is that I dropped most of my classes, punting my graduation date into super super senior territory.

EXOS Pt 1:

As many of you know, I’m releasing a new yoyo with Jeff Pang, this Sunday. It’s called the EXOS.

Note: The image is of the Evora, not the Exos. Evora is one of the inspirations for the Exos.

I’m going to be writing a few posts talking about making the yoyo. Here is Part 1:

August 2015, TOKYO

I’m at the World Yoyo Contest. Completely exhausted. It’s 100 degrees outside. The humidity is more or less the same.

I’ve brought one a hundred and fifty pounds of Duncan crew gear from Ohio. It’s spread across four suitcases that I’ve lugged back and forth through the city, through subways, up and down stairs, across all the perfectly calculated tight spaces that Tokyo can offer. I’ve lost seven pounds in five days.

At this point, I haven’t yoyoed in over a year. The longest I’ve ever gone without. I’m too busy promoting it to ever even throw one.

Directing contests, working on new products, traveling for promotions, going to trade shows, filling out endless approval forms and spreadsheets. Absolutely getting lost in the required minutiae. When my email dips below 400 unreads, that’s somehow a good sign. A lot of it is interesting work, but I’m working crazy hours and it’s a constant deluge. I feel somewhere between actively drowning and head above water.

Do I even still like this?

World Yoyo Contest this year is in Akihabara, the tech and anime otaku epicenter of Japan. It's about as bright and loud and hyper obsessed and overstimulating as you might imagine.

I’m in the basement of the contest building, trying to find some peace and quiet from all the hectic nonstop everything from the last 18 months.

I honestly never want to hear another dubstep song or see another brain twister combo in my life. Certainly not both in conjunction. by @augiefash

Happy Father’s Day, dad.
I sure do have a lot to catch you up on someday.
In the meantime, I’m happy to know that I look just like you, right down to the big ears and all. Think you’ll be happy to know that I’ve grown up to be a lot like you too. by @augiefash

Cleaning out all my old hard drives. Found this old out take back from my @c3yoyodesign days.
I was originally going to make a much more serious video (forgive the awkward stare), but I opted to make “Shredding” instead. The rest, as they say, is history. 😂🙌 by @augiefash
