Holding t’ai freedom ford’s & more black (Augury Books, 2019) is like trying to hold a fish: beautiful and vibrant, each poem leaps off the page, the intricate use of wordplay and internal rhyme slipping from line to line. The surprise of finding another book halfway through to flip around to keeps us on our toes, unable to settle in or get comfortable for too long. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Wangechu Mutu, Kara Walker and Carrie Mae Weems, ford takes snapshots of life as a Black queer woman in New York and charges them with ancestry and memory. Through their bold specificity, each poem, each line, leaves an indelible mark of defiance: “what sort of / gift is this i make gibberish of English / nasty as black licorice we don’t tapdance / no more all we do is this: (middle finger / emoji).”

ford will be joining us in-person at 144 Montague Street for the Brooklyn Poets Reading Series this Friday at 7pm, where she’ll be reading alongside Patrycja Humienik and Ariana Reines. The event, which will also be livestreamed on Zoom, is free and open to the public. In-person tickets are SOLD OUT, but you can still register to receive the Zoom link until Friday at 7pm!
