I Saw Beyond the Signal, And You Should Too!

I attended its private screening on Thursday, and it reminded me exactly why I prefer documentaries over any other type of film. I enjoyed it!

The documentary follows a group of adventurers who travelled to the Drill Ranch in Afi, Cross River State — no roads, no comfort, and no network. The production was beautiful, It was well-paced. Nothing dragged. And what made it even more interesting was the fusion of the human element and the wildlife — neither overshadowing the other. It wasn’t just about the animals. It was about the people caring for them, the adventurers experiencing it all, what it’s like to actually live there, to fend for yourself, in a place with no network.

But then came the part that sobered me real quick.
As I watched, I noticed the people running this conservatory, living out there away from their families in the middle of the wilderness, and I thought for a minute ‘finally, something we are doing right’, but I was told they’re being funded by Americans. 😩

We’ve had the conversation many times about the “white saviour” narrative in films — why can’t we be the people saving ourselves? But here we are, in Nigeria, with animals at risk of extinction, and we cannot fund their protection. We need someone else to come in, pay the staff, and keep these animals alive. 🤦🏻‍♀️
We talk endlessly about developing this country. Conferences. Seminars. But our own wildlife, on our own land, and we still can’t fund it ourselves? I sat with that with heaviness.

Anyway, would I personally go to the Drill Ranch? Absolutely not. 😂 I’m not that type of adventurer .
There is no network there. And I do not do creepy crawlies. I am not spending my night wondering if a snake will pass through my cabin on its way to see bae! 😂. That is not the life for me.
But if you love nature, love adventure, and want to see something that will move you — this is for you.👌
