It’s officially Giving Tuesday! Feels like as good a moment as any to talk about our film, Daffodil. We’re accepting tax-deductible donations for our short film based on a particular stretch of my life, when my mom, who has Cerebral Palsy, and I were figuring out how to start over after leaving an abusive home.

And at the center of the project is a larger truth: representations of disability in film are still rare, often flattened or sentimentalized, and almost never authored by the people who lived the thing.

Which is part of why this project exists. It’s our effort to make a piece of work in which disability isn’t a symbol or a lesson or a plot device, but a lived reality that shapes the emotional life of a family trying to make it in the world. The film will star @tinafriml and we’re beyond excited to share this story with her at the helm.

We’ve launched our crowdfunding campaign through Fractured Atlas, which means donations are tax-deductible. Fractured Atlas is an incredible 501c3 arts nonprofit that creates opportunities for artists like me to fund their work. Donations of all sizes are welcome, which is not just a polite formality on our part but an actual, lived truth of independent filmmaking. Seriously, a little goes a long way!

If any part of this resonates, whether it’s the film, the themes, or the broader need for disability stories told from the inside, you can contribute via the link in our bio.

And thank you, sincerely, for even reading this far. Attention is its own kind of generosity, and in a project like this, it matters more than you’d think. 🌼

We’re making a film based on the true story of me and my mom, who is a single mother with cerebral palsy.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far:

1. Representation means telling the stories of those who live them.

2. Writing from such a personal place is hard.

3. Finding community makes the work feel whole.

4. If something is hard to explain, then find a way to show people instead.

As the son of a mother living with cerebral palsy, I grew up impacted by the general public’s hesitation over her way of being. When I was four years old, grocery clerks were already looking to me to decipher the tone of her voice, the peculiar bend of her hands, hoping I could somehow absolve them of their discomfort. I had an agency as a toddler that she didn’t have as an adult. I became her translator, a compulsory guardian expected to pull people out of the inconvenience of their interactions with her. I sat through the baby-talk, the talking down, the insults to her intelligence.

Representation isn’t always easy. The market looks to the past for proof, and takes chances on the future. While we hope that our media reflects the most important issues of our time, it cannot be ignored that convenience can have a hold over the best of our intentions. It’s difficult for the broader public to understand, engage, and witness underrepresented voices when the financial powers at be don’t find value in investing in their stories.

My next short film, DAFFODIL, tells the story about a young woman and her son moments after fleeing an abusive relationship. There are some intense themes, but ultimately it’s a story about hope, motherhood, and what it means to protect the ones you love. 💛

🌼 DAFFODIL 🌼
I’m so proud to launch the fundraising campaign for DAFFODIL, a narrative short film inspired by my real-life story about my mom who lives with Cerebral Palsy, Jennifer Gibson.

Set in the 90’s, DAFFODIL follows a mother with Cerebral Palsy who is working to build a better life for her son after leaving an abusive relationship. This film is deeply personal to me, and it also highlights the need for authentic disability representation in storytelling. Too often, disability communities aren’t centered in the stories we see onscreen. This film features a mother with CP who protects and provides for her son as they set out for a new life.

I’m beyond excited to share that @tinafriml is starring in this film and producing alongside @augustjgibson, @kemmafilby, and @kdamfunny

By supporting this project, you’ll help bring a story of resilience, love, and hope to the screen while uplifting disability narratives in film. Over the next few months, I’ll share more about the project and about our story. I just found some old home movie footage I can’t wait to share! :)

🎬 Tax-deductible donations are now open. Contributions of all sizes are welcome!

Thank you for believing in our story. 💛

Come #behindthescenes with us on the surrealist & fantastical ‘My Little Renaissance Girl’ (@mylittlerenaissancegirl) with #cinematographer Dom Udell (@domudell) 🎥

“Overall the look we were going for was something very textural, classic and soft. We also really wanted to really ground this film with restrained, languid camera work - creating natural frames to experience the people within each scene - later morphing into more surreal camerawork after the midpoint of the story. That way we could thrust the audience into what our main character, Amy, is feeling in those moments. Panavision really helped us achieve that through their vast expertise and support.

We spent a lot of time looking at Venetian Renaissance painters like Titian and Belini. We fell in love with the dramatic modeling of light as well as the color harmony from painters of that time. For film references, we also took a lot of camera inspiration from films of the late 60s and early 70s. The work of Gordon Willis and John Alcott were heavy references. Their framing, movement and color were all jumping off points for us.

We chose the #UltraSpeeds & #SuperSpeeds because we wanted that warm, vintage feel and something that flared nicely. We also needed fast, reliable lenses so that we could shoot with natural light whenever possible. Getting to incorporate the 25-250mm zoom was also a fun way for us to add flavor with some manual zooms where I was pulling right off the barrel. It was really exciting mixing in the zoom lens when we felt inspired to.”

Starring, written & directed by Amy Heller Zimmerman (@coldpeetza) and produced by Anthony Gibson (@anthjgibson) and Lauren Partch (@lauren_rosemary_), it’s premiering at the Davis Theater in Chicago on November 2nd! by @augustjgibson
