my decision to major in communication sciences and disorders is a deeply personal one that i relate to as a child who had a stutter and as an adult who still has it today. growing up in the school system as a child with a fluency disorder was not easy when every day you were called a "broken record", or when you were asked "why are you repeating yourself?". it made me dread coming to school knowing that some kind of remark about something i can't control was waiting for me there.

one day a week i would get to escape the classroom & get to see my speech therapist in her classroom with other kids who were like me. i distinctly remember this being my favorite part of the week every week because for those couple minutes i wasn't looked at differently for not speaking the same as everyone else. in that classroom, i felt love, acceptance, & the understanding that my disorder did not define me.

that feeling inside that room, and the feelings i felt outside of it, impacted me so deeply that i never want any child like me to feel like that ever again. that’s why i decided to pursue a path in speech-language pathology. because i'm so connected to it.

my end goal is to be an slp in the school system to hopefully impact other kids that age to make the same decision i have, to give back to others who are just like them.

while i will never grow out of my stutter, and that's okay, i've learned that you have to turn what makes you special, into your superpower. and i did.
