Come Back has been out vibrating your ear drums for a week 😱…

Lots of things go into making a tune right? Not just the actual playing shit but often those between times - walking between the studio and home, seeing a sunset, laughing with a friend at the pub after a sesh - when the creative process continues to roll under the surface ❤️

Thanks to new and old friends for your really moving messages. This tune sits in quite a raw and visceral spot for me - in all the human ways - so your love and support mean a lot.

A little glimpse into my burgeoning love affair with the ARP2500. I’d been salivating over this synth for a very long time…but I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to play one - only around 100 were ever made!

Blows my mind to think I’ve spent *quite* 🤭 a few hours with it as part of my artist in residency opportunity here at The Townshend Studio at the University of West London. Me and ARP2500 are still in the honeymoon phase with so much more to learn. Most mornings I’ll go and spend some time exploring, but then end up falling in love with a patch I’ve got lost in for a few hours, and so, I record everything 😅.

Have added a lil sketch track from yesterday featuring the delicious warm and detuned ARP2500, my voice and a little bit of ms20. It’s raw and a bit rough around the edges - complete with scratch vocals and all! (Going through a phase of pitching and speeding up my vox atm…) but figure it’s all in keeping with the aliveness of these synth beasts and creative exploration generally!

The ARP2500 (and all other featured synthy friends) belong to Pete Townshend who has asked the London College of Music to look after these beautiful instruments. Social media channels for the studio will be up and running soon - I’ll share once they are! Feel free to shoot any questions about the patch, or the residency, in a dm or below 👇

Time has become deliciously and weirdly amorphous over the last lil while. Punctuated by the cutest toothless smiles, hard days followed by random new skills, broken sleep, letting go of BL (before Leo) routines and finding new ways of doing shit, surrendering to the longest recovery I’ve ever experienced thanks to this breechy boi ✂️ (during the grossesst of heatwaves), big beautiful moments of strange nostalgia, sentimentality and gratitude, many many songs that even he finds absurd, getting teary at the generosity and love shown by family and friends, snatching moments to jam with beloved collaborators, as many cuddles with Alex as I can, rocking the ghost eyelash and eyebrow look, major short term memory loss, being haunted by milk smells, really enjoying looking at trees as if for the first time again, amazed at the ambidextrous and one handed skills I never knew I had, etc etc. any of those ring a bell? by @auncemusic

Tremors in Copper is out next Friday.

Today is Bandcamp Friday, which means Bandcamp waive their share of sales for the day, so if you were thinking about picking up the record, today is a particularly lovely time to do it.

Green Language / Self Projected is out today, featuring incredible production & vocals from @auncemusic

This track started life under a different name, The Conference of Birds. I’d been reading about David and Solomon, particularly the story of Solomon being taught the language of the birds, which led me to a Sufi poem called The Conference of the Birds.

In it à large flock of birds set out in search of a mythical bird which represents the divine. They have to pass through 7 valleys to find it which are used to map out an archetypal journey towards the self.

Quest: the decision to begin the search, where thought forms are born into physical reality.

Love: the abandonment of reason and logic, giving yourself over to something you can’t necessarily understand or control.

Gnosis / Knowledge: some things can only really be known through experiencing them.

Detachment: letting things exist without constantly trying to possess, preserve or control them.

Unity: the dissolution of the boundary between self and other. We witness and experience the world through one another and, ultimately, are part of the same thing.

Bewilderment: getting lost. The ideas and structures that got you this far stop making sense and there’s nothing obvious left to follow.

Poverty and Annihilation: having nothing left to cling to. No quest, no desire, and eventually no separate self doing the searching.

Eventually only 30 birds arrive and what they find is themselves reflected back at them. That idea fed quite deeply into Tremors in Copper, the B-side to this track, Self Projected, touches on the same theme.

Duality and non-duality come up throughout the record, along with projection, reflection, and the ways we experience ourselves through other people.

Towards the end of last year I met Hendrik Weber, @panthaduprince_official and we got talking about his album Conference of Trees. I loved the connection, but it made me want to find another way into the idea for my own track.

That led me to Green Language, or langue verte, an old esoteric idea connected with the language of the birds, alchemy, hidden knowledge. It is thought to be an angelic or divine language.. by @auncemusic

The next single from Tremors In Copper, Green Language, is out on Friday.

It’s 2 tracks with the inimitable @auncemusic & this is the B-side, Self Projected. This one’s not included on the album.

It’s about Projection / Mirroring and the broader idea: how much of what we think we see in other people is really ourselves reflecting back at us?

Sometimes mirroring can be a beautiful thing but a lot of the time, being seen too clearly by someone else can make us retreat behind the ego.

In the more mesmerising times, it helps us to loosen our grip on that version of ourselves that we try so brutally to protect.

Referring to an aspect of Human Design, Self Projected explores the distance between that defensive tension and the beauty in becoming grounded and open instead. by @auncemusic

I had a really great chat with Kelly, the visionary behind @metalndvst - a great platform and community that dives into creative practice on a whole nother level. Kelly asks questions that are insightful, searching, fun and evidently come from someone who is v familiar with the the inner workings of creativity. She da bomb.

We talked about a bunch of deeply human things - creativity as lifeblood, childhood and the ways in which authenticity gets blocked, grief, loss, love, playing safe to algorithms …to name just a few! I hope some of the things in there resonate - lemme know ! I’ll pop the link in my bio.
