"The Worlds Between Ask Nothing of You Except Everything You Ever Were"

I don't just paint the mask. My practice involves bringing the pieces to life in dimensional mediums.

Before a figure in one of my paintings ever puts on a mask, that mask has already existed in the world: cut, painted, held in my hands. Creating dimensional pieces of masks, flowers, headdresses, and other symbols in my work helps me connect with my work. It's a way of holding the symbol in my hand before it makes its way onto the paper.

Each piece is made with wood, paper mache, paper clay, cardboard, or other mediums. I don't make a dimensional piece from every piece/symbol in a single painting. More often, I choose the pieces that, from the initial drawing, feel exciting to bring to life in a dimensional medium.

This is the part of my process people don't always see, but I've been excited to start sharing more openly as I open up about my process. The pieces that come to life off the paper start from the same instinct, that a symbol should be able to survive being held, not just looked at. by @auniakahn

Color is something I explore by feel. I don't plan a palette or pick colors out ahead of time (except red) ❤️ I work intuitively, mixing and testing swatches as the painting develops, and let each hue answer the last one.

When a piece is finished, I digitally sample its colors to see what the palette says on its own, apart from the drawing and painting. Removed from the figures and ornament, the symbols and stories, the swatches show me the painting's mood in its purest form, and often reveal relationships I made without knowing it.

My practice is intuitive and emergent. The work arises from a deeper, subconscious source, and its meaning is rarely available to me during the making.

Often it only begins to reveal itself once a piece is complete, sometimes taking a week or two to come into focus. This process of delayed interpretation is central to how I understand my practice.

Meaning is discovered rather than imposed. Returning to works months or years later, I often find layers of significance that were not present, or not visible to me, at the time of their creation. by @auniakahn

Right now, it feels like I opened a long-lost treasure chest of myself that was lost at sea for two decades. ⭐ Everything was there waiting for me, and right now I am unpacking this treasure chest day by day, and the things I keep finding heal my heart and soul daily.

Then it all started to come back to me. 😍 I have been able to work in gentle traditional mediums, which has been so exciting! I took a 180-degree style change last year at this time, and it feels like home. I am now excited to take my paintings and move them into dimensional mediums and performance.
