Randy Babichuk is an Indigenous artist, Status Indian, and a member of the Ucluelet First Nation. Born and raised in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, he now lives and works in Victoria, British Columbia.
A lifelong artist, Babichuk first developed his visual language through comics, spending his teenage years and early twenties drawing, self-publishing more than 30 issues of his own zine, and contributing illustrations to a variety of independent publications.
Deeply influenced by the DIY ethos of the punk scene of the 1980s and 1990s, he also performed in several bands while creating album artwork and promotional graphics for musicians. That foundation of self-expression, rebellion, and community continues to inform his contemporary practice.
Working primarily with hand-cut stencils and spray paint, Babichuk creates bold, layered works that merge Indigenous identity with punk aesthetics and Pop Art influences. His paintings explore themes of culture, resistance, humour, and belonging, transforming familiar visual languages into distinctly personal narratives. Through this fusion of contemporary street art techniques and Indigenous perspectives, he creates work that is immediate, graphic, and unapologetically his own.
An emerging voice in contemporary Indigenous art, Babichuk has exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions. His original paintings, prints, patches, stickers, and other artist-made goods are available through select retailers on Vancouver Island and at the Aunty Collective, a space dedicated to supporting Indigenous 2SLGBTQIA+ artists. by @auntycollective
