Only 17% of the UK’s cyber workforce is women. It’s time to change that.

Cyber security needs diversity of thought and that starts with diversity in the workplace.

I became the role model I needed growing up. Now I hope to inspire others to do the same. Be an ally, uplift others. Will you join me? šŸ’œ

There’s not a single path into cyber security and that’s okay! No journey looks the same in the long run.

Here are some examples of ways to enter the industry, which did you take? šŸ‘€ #cybercareer #cybersecurity #cybereducation #cyberjobopportunities by @auraincyber

🚨 The threat sometimes starts with access that’s already been trusted. So what do we know about the Asos attack so far?

Last post we discussed if someone steals your credentials and uses them to attack an organisation, who’s responsible?

Now let’s see the impact firsthand. Swipe through to learn more!

🚨 THE BIGGEST CYBERSECURITY RISK MIGHT NOT BE WHO YOU THINK!

It could be someone with legitimate access. Someone who made one mistake. Or someone whose credentials were stolen without them even knowing.

That’s the reality of insider threats. And during Cyber security Awareness Month, it’s a reminder worth paying attention to.

-A trusted account can be compromised.
-A person can be manipulated.
-A simple mistake can expose sensitive data.
-BUT the right security controls can help stop a small incident becoming a major breach.

But here’s the question: if someone uses your credentials to carry out a cyberattack, does that make you the threat?
Cyber security is about understanding how access, trust

and human behaviour can create risk.

CYBER SECURITY ADVICE NEEDS TO CALM DOWN ā—ļø

It’s Cyber security Awareness Month. So let’s talk about the security advice that makes everyone paranoid and confuses possible with probable.

No, that doesn’t mean the threats aren’t real.

It means the advice deserves a little more scrutiny. So here are 4 cyber security takes that need a little more context…

People dish out so much advice to beginners in cyber security that it’s easy to get lost in what you should actually be doing.

Here are my hot takes on advice you shouldn’t be listening to as a junior in the industry!

-You dont need to plan your careers 10 years into the future. The reality is that the plan will change a lot early on and you need to be open to that. Instead, write down the goals you want to achieve and be flexible.
-You don’t need a degree in cyber security. Yes, a degree opens up the world of grad roles but many cyber security roles won’t require that exact degree. Lots of people move in cyber security later on or through starting in adjacent careers.
-You don’t need tons of certifications. Realistically the bare minimum and a good portfolio is more than enough. Someone with 20 certa but no way to prove their skills will not be looked favourably upon.
-You don’t need to build a home lab as your first project. It’s not mandatory or always relevant. Consider the type of role you are aiming for!
-You don’t need to code to get into cyber security. There are plenty of non technical roles out there!

Conferences are one of the best places to learn but can feel very intimidating to people starting out in the industry, particularly if you’re going alone. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

Being alone gives you the opportunity to meet new people and make connections you may not have outside of the space. Many professionals come alone and find their community there and it’s those real, awkward in the queue conversations that can honestly be the most rewarding.

Don’t cross something off your list just because you are alone. Give yourself the chance to explore, it could help you in the long run.

Throughout my career I had perceptions of exactly how each stage should follow. Safe to say that I turned each of them on it’s head! Your path into your career won’t always be straight forward and often the best thing to do is to allow yourself to take a different path if it is better for you in the long run.

Change is normal. What matters is how you react to it and that skill translates brilliantly to cyber security.

All we ever see is the wins in cyber security across social media so it’s about time we show you the flops that happen in-between.

Every win comes with a series of fails that isn’t often shared with others but they act as learning opportunities and moments to reflect on. šŸ˜– Here are my recent fails…

I spent weeks automating a process that realistically should’ve taken one because I overcomplicated it!

I’ve postponed plenty of exams due to miscalculating my study ability and spare time.

I saved something on my todo list I really wanted to apply for but forgot when it came to the day. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

I was invited to an award ceremony, travelled 3 hours for it but by the time I got there I was so burnt out that I just ate my fill and left. Turns out some role models I really looked up to were there that day!

I forgot to check my last post for spelling errors before posting and missed out 2 major mistakes. Realised 3 days later 😌

What’s your recent flop?

There’s a big difference between cyber security on social media and cyber security as a job. After doing the hours, these are the things I wish someone told me before I started.

1ļøāƒ£ If you’re a SOC analyst, repetition is real. The same alerts, the same investigations, the same workflow… until one alert turns into a genuine incident.

2ļøāƒ£ Don’t expect every role to be a 9-5. Depending on the team, on-call rotations, shift work and late nights are part of the job.

3ļøāƒ£ You can’t talk about work. Most people won’t understand what you do, and keeping parts of your job private is simply part of working in security.

4ļøāƒ£ Your best work is often invisible. If everything is running smoothly and no attacks are successful, that usually means you’ve done your job well.

5ļøāƒ£ It has is its own language. You learn very quickly how to write reports, summarise incidents and speak in meetings without using the wrong terminology.

Which one surprised you the most? šŸ‘‡

Here’s 5ļøāƒ£ things that I don’t do in order to support my learning and development in the industry.

āŒ1. I don’t learn tools. I learn the theory behind them and apply it. Tools come and go. Simply learning to master a single tool will not be beneficial to you in the long run if you don’t understand how it works. What happens when the tool is no longer part of the tech stack?

āŒ2. I don’t chase certifications. Having 20 pieces of paper amounting to thousands of pounds isn’t the flex you think it is. Could you have been doing something better with your time? Get hands-on and upskill in your pathway, not 5 others for the sake of it.

āŒ3. I don’t memorise commands. The real world isn’t an exam hall. Know where to look, how they work and what to do if you’re stuck.

āŒ4. I don’t know everything. No one does. Don’t force feed yourself knowledge you don’t need. Cyber security is huge and specialising in everything will burn you out.

āŒ5. I don’t rely on AI. Controversial one… I’d rather give something a go, fail, read up on it and try again. Rely on your knowledge, AI can support that but not guide you step by step. Otherwise, who’s actually learning?
